Team - Highest Score By Hampshire

714-5 v Nottinghamshire (Rose Bowl, September 2005)

Nottinghamshire arrived at the Rose Bowl having clinched the Championship in their previous match against Kent. Notts won the toss, chose to bowl and dismissed Sean Ervine with just 10 runs scored. However, Jimmy Adams and Simon Katich made fifties, while John Crawley led the way, and the first day closed with Hampshire 424-4.

The next morning was mayhem. Hampshire’s highest score of 672-7 declared v Somerset at Taunton, had stood since 1899 but after Pothas went early for 46, Crawley and Mascarenhas added 254 for the sixth wicket in just 32 overs. Hampshire might have declared at lunch, having passed the Taunton record but they took four more overs to reach 700 for the first time. The visitors, clearly shattered by their experience were bowled out twice and despite an interruption for rain, had lost by an innings before the end of day three as Hampshire secured their place as Championship runners-up.

Individual - Highest Score For Hampshire

316 - Dick Moore v Warwickshire (Bournemouth, 1937)

During the summer of 1899, Major General RM Poore took time off from his military duties to enjoy the finest season by any Hampshire batsman in the club’s history, during which he became the county’s first triple centurion with an innings of 304 v Somerset at Taunton.

In the twenty-first century there have been three more scores over 300, two by John Crawley and one by Michael Carberry.

By contrast, through the whole of the twentieth century there was only one such innings, when Dick Moore scored 316 in one day against Warwickshire at Bournemouth in 1937 – and that innings remains Hampshire’s highest ever.

Dick was only 23 when he registered this record score. He opened the batting and reached his first century before lunch and was finally adjudged lbw from the penultimate ball of the final over.
