Adams Hits Form on Return from Injury

Hampshire Second XI drew with Somerset Second XI

Hampshire benefited from the expertise of Jimmy Adams (117) to secure a draw against Somerset, as batsmen Joe Weatherley (99) and Ryan Stevenson (65) continued to show great potential.

Trailing Somerset by 26 runs after the first innings, Hampshire completed the match by scoring 290-4, a fine exhibition of what this side are capable of achieving with the bat.

Spin bowler Mason Crane (4-72) impressed once again, dismissing Somerset’s captain, Johann Myburgh (81), as he was beginning to look dangerous at the crease.    

Adams spent over five hours crafting a fine century in the first innings, after fellow opener Tom Alsop (0) was caught early by Somerset’s Joshua Bess.

Hampshire scored a total of 288 after Ryan Stevenson added to Adams’ score with a gritty 65, as wickets fell for low scores around him, Somerset bowlers Josh Davey (4-51) and Jamie Overton (4-58) taking four wickets each.

Hants bowlers Tino Best (1-37) and Josh McCoy (1-36) found early breakthroughs, dismissing the opening pair of Adam Hose (0) and Edward Byrom (4) respectively.

Spinner Mason Crane took the key wicket of Somerset captain Johann Myburgh, who was the away side’s primary source of runs, accumulating 81 from 106 balls.

Craig Young denied Jim Allenby (49) of a half century, and Brad Wheal dismissed George Bartlett shortly after he’d surpassed 50.

Crane took revenge on Somerset wicket-takers Davey (42) and Overton (0), reducing the visitors to 304-8. Somerset declared shortly after at 314-8.

There was enough play left for Hampshire’s rising star Joe Weatherley to impress with the bat, hitting 99 runs before being cruelly dismissed one shy of his ton.

Aaron West hit scored 81 runs from 80 balls to leave Hampshire with a strong total of 290-4, securing a draw with Somerset.
