Georgia Adams hit 41 as the Southern Vipers defeated Surrey Stars in their first ever Kia Super League match
Georgia Adams scored 41 runs off 43 balls to seal victory for the Vipers in their first ever Kia Super League game, defeating Surrey Stars by six wickets on an unforgettable occasion at the The Ageas Bowl.
Tash Farrant led a superb bowling attack to restrict the Stars to 85-6 after their 20 overs, before Adams and Suzie Bates (25) put on an opening stand of 66 runs to effectively decide the contest.
Lydia Greenway (13*) scored the winning boundary as the Vipers made a fantastic start in the inaugral Kia Super League competition, securing the win with 28 balls remaining and picking up a bonus point with a supreme all-round effort.
After Surrey Stars elected to bat first at the The Ageas Bowl, Southern Vipers made a furious start with the ball, led by Farrant (2-15), who took two wickets in her first two overs.
Suzie Bates took the key wicket of Bryony Smith (7), clean-bowling the Stars’ opening batsmen to reduce the visitors to 20-3 as the Vipers made an ideal start in the Kia Super League.
Hampshire’s Katie George prevented the visitors from scoring with any regularity, bowling a terrifically measured maiden tenth over to restrict the Stars to 29-5 at the halfway stage.
16-year-old George, wearing 99 for the Vipers, went for just two runs off her first two overs, showing serious ability with the ball on the biggest stage of her young career by some margin.
In the 13th over, Charlotte Edwards was involved in a fielding collision with Fi Morris– both attempting to catch Sciver on 11 runs – and the Vipers skipper had to leave the field for medical attention, ruled out of further action as a precautionary measure.
Natalia Sciver (36) and Rene Farrell (17) supplied a 37-run stand to take Surrey to a more competitive 85-6, but the Vipers’ bowlers had put the home side in a commanding position going into the batting innings.
With Edwards watching from the sidelines, Georgia Adams joined regular opener Suzie Bates in the middle and dazzled in front of over 2,000 spectators showing their support at the The Ageas Bowl.
Adams’s composed knock included seven boundaries as she reached 40 at a run a ball, only to be denied of a deserved fifty by a superb caught and bowled from Surrey Stars bowler Alex Hartley.
Adams was at the helm of a 66-run opening partnership which effectively sealed the contest for the home side, and her dismissal in the 12th over provided the only lapse in an otherwise flawless opening performance by the Vipers. Sara McGlashan and Bates departed as the home side were briefly pegged back at 68-3.
Lydia Greenway led the Vipers to victory and sealed it with a beautiful drive to mid-off, encapsulating an assured display from the home side and picking up a bonus point at the The Ageas Bowl.
