Tom Alsop showed class and determination with the bat against MCC's Young Cricketers, hitting 151 runs off 128 balls in a convincing 221-run win for Hampshire’s Second XI in a 50-over meeting on the Nursery Ground.

Opening partner Joe Weatherley (54) was amongst the runs once more, as he and Lewis McManus (62) produced assured half-tons to compound Alsop’s magnificent display, the home side finishing on 404-5.

A fine victory was secured when the visitors were reduced to 183 all out by some excellent fielding, Jake Goodwin (2-20) one of four Hants bowlers to take two wickets.

Hampshire’s top order scored at an alarming rate, Alsop finding the boundary on 18 occasions and smashing two maximums during an impressive 151-run innings.

Weatherley added runs quickly beside him, taking the home side to 129 before Pravan Sivarajah struck in the 17th over, Sean Solia catching Weatherley for MCC’s first wicket.

Lewis McManus took to the crease with an air of composure, and quickly helped Alsop double Hampshire’s total, moving Hants along to 250 with his own fifty, which included four maximums.

McManus was beaten by the best of an expensive MCC bowling attack, Ryan Buckley (3-79) - Joe Barrett taking the catch this time – and Buckley struck again soon after, taking his second wicket when he clean-bowled Aaron West (7).

Alsop was eventually dismissed, having survived 41 overs and surpassed 150 runs, then Fraser Hat scored a useful 28, leaving Jake Goodwin (39) and Andy Gorvin (40) to further extend Hampshire’s impressive tally, finishing unbeaten at the crease at 404-5.

Josh McCoy then enhanced Hampshire’s dominance in the game, first trapping opener Saf Imtiaz (12) and then his partner, Joe Barrett (14), to leave the visitors on 33-2 – Hants had scored 252 runs before the fall their second wicket.

Tom Smith (41) supplied some resilience for MCC, hitting three boundaries and three maximums, but Jake Goodwin ended his hopes of recovering the state of play, finding his edge - which McManus gloved - before taking his partner Adeel Shafique (18).

Fraser Hay (2-39) then troubled the middle order, dismissing Buckley (12) and Solia (31), who had looked in good touch before edging Hay’s delivery to McManus. MCC were reeling on 162-8.

To conclude a fine all-round performance from Hampshire’s Second XI, Gorvin and the star of the show, Alsop, smartly ran out Jordan Thompson (4) and Sivarajah (1) respectively.

A 221-run victory is a signal that the team is moving in the right direction, and Tom Alsop has announced himself as a contender for First XI action having expertly hit back-to-back centuries this week.
