Captain Gareth Berg scored 38 runs to help Hampshire Second XI to a 6-wicket victory over MCC YC in the first of a T20 double-header at Shenley.

Lewis McManus hit 35 off 20 balls and Joe Weatherley usefully contributed 24 runs, after Brad Wheal (3-17) had troubled the MCC batsmen in four overs with the ball, reducing the home side to 141-7.

Berg’s classy 38 included five boundaries and was compounded by some fine maximum-hitting from McManus, who smashed four sixes to secure victory alongside Ryan Stevenson (7).

Hampshire’s decision to field immediately benefited them, as Gareth Andrew dismissed Safwaan Imtiaz (6), leaving MCC YC on 10-1 at the end of the second over.

When Josh McCoy removed Joe Barrett and Glenn Phillips for low scores, and Brad Wheal found an edge from opener Ben Curran, Hampshire were in the driving seat, reducing MCC to 49-4.

MCC skipper Ryan Buckley supplied a resolute 36 to put the home side back in contention but Brad Wheal’s bowling had significantly enhanced the visitors’ chances of sealing a win, need to beat 141-7.

Berg and Goodwin built an assured opening partnership of 49 runs, before Goodwin edged Barrett’s delivery to Marc Lezar.

Berg helped Hampshire to 95-2, hitting five boundaries before being removed by Andrew Hazeldine, leaving McManus and Weatherley to apply the finishing touches.

McManus wasted no time in accumulating his 35, which came off 20 balls and included four sixes.

Stevenson joined Weatherley at 122-4 and added seven runs to help surpass MCC YC's 141-run total and secure a 6-wicket victory for Hampshire.

Lewis McManus’ composed 55-run innings was not enough to hand Hampshire’s Second XI a second victory in their T20 double header against MCC Young Cricketers.

Gareth Berg captained Hants to 166-4, but formidable batting performances from MCC’s Joe Barrett (59) and Glenn Phillips (47) denied Hampshire of total domination at Shenley, as MCC YC won by four wickets.

Berg and Goodwin were unable to reproduce their strong start in the first T20 against MCC YC, as the skipper’s wicket fell in the second over.

At 52-3, Hants were requiring an intervention from Lewis McManus – who had batted excellently earlier in the day – and the wicket-keeper batsman supplied 55 runs off 57 balls – he and Weatherley pushing the visitors to 124-4.

Ryan Stevenson added 24 runs off 13 balls, and the visitors were in a positive position at the change of innings, at 166-4, knowing MCC YC had only managed 141 runs in the first contest.

When Gareth Andrew (2-32) trapped Safwaan Imtiaz (1) at lbw in the second over, the visitors looked on course for a win, but Barrett hit 59 off 32 balls and Phillips scored 47 off 28 to put Hants on the back foot.

Hamza Ali (2-20) removed the pair, finding an edge from Barrett and bowling Phillips, to leave MCC YC with 142-4 in the 16th over, requiring 24.

Goodwin smartly ran out James Harris (19) and Andrew dismissed Marc Lezar (1), but Sean Solia (6) and skipper Ryan Buckley (9) hit the winning runs, securing a 4-wicket victory for the home side.
