Hampshire suffered a five-wicket defeat to Kent despite a half-century from Michael Carberry and three wickets for Fidel Edwards in the Royal London One-Day Cup
A blistering half-century from Michael Carberry (61) and three wickets for Fidel Edwards (3-47) were not enough to see Hampshire claim back-to-back Royal London One-Day Cup victories, as they fell to a five-wicket defeat against Kent at Canterbury.
Despite Carberry starting positively after Hampshire were asked to bat first, the frequent loss of wickets meant Hampshire failed to regain the momentum following the openers loss, eventually concluding on 233.
Fifties for both Daniel Bell-Drummond (80*) and Joe Denly (78) then guided the hosts towards the target, and despite wickets for Edwards and Mason Crane (2-70), Kent reached the required runs with relative ease.
Hampshire began in excellent style with opener Carberry enjoying much of the early strike to guide his side to 80-0 inside the opening 10-over powerplay. He also brought up his quick-fire half-century within the period having scored at a staggering rate to begin.
The left-hander departed shortly after however, and his loss soon halted the flow of boundaries with the scoring-rate soon dropping considerably with some efficient bowling.
Kent then made further in-roads with three more top-order batsmen departing in quick succession as Hampshire fell from 105-1 to 129-4.
Opener Jimmy Adams (47) looked to have led the away-side’s recovery with some patient stroke-play and he steered his side past 150, before he then too fell at the hands of an impressive Fabian Cowdrey (3-32).
Regular wickets continued to fall with two run-outs accounting for the loss of both Gareth Berg (18) and Liam Dawson (28) before Hampshire’s innings finally concluded with the final five wickets falling for the addition of just 75 runs.
In reply, openers Denly and Bell-Drummond got off to a solid start guiding Kent past the 50 without loss.
The duo continued to build and they looked in good-touch as Kent looked more than comfortable at 130-1 with just 24 overs gone, but when the returning Edwards pouched a superb caught and bowled, the dangerous Denly departed.
Kent then looked to be in further trouble when Mason Crane picked up the two key wickets of Sam Northeast (6) and Sam Billings (0) inside the same over.
With Hampshire sensing a small opportunity to build further pressure, Edwards then struck twice more with Darren Stevens (21) and Cowdrey falling to the seamer with Kent slumping to 188-5.
Despite the small collapse, Bell-Drummond remained at the crease and with ultimately too small a total to defend, Hampshire suffered defeat as the right-hander guided Kent to the required target with seven overs to spare.
