Crane Captures Maiden Five-Wicket Haul as Hampshire Enjoy Excellent Second Day

Mason Crane and Fidel Edwards both picked up five-wicket hauls as Hampshire dominated day two v Warwickshire

A maiden first-class five-wicket haul for Mason Crane (5-35), as well as an equally sensational bowling performance from Fidel Edwards (5-31), saw Hampshire enjoy an excellent day two as they finished with a lead of 242 over Warwickshire in the LV= County Championship match at the The Ageas Bowl.

Gareth Berg (54) reached his third half-century of the season early in the opening session to help see Hampshire to 285 in their first-innings, before Edwards struck just before lunch to leave the visitors 27-1 at the interval.

Crane then dismissed Varun Chopra (37) to commence the procession as nine wickets fell at the hands of both the leg-spinner and Edwards for the addition of just 47 runs with both men picking up deserved five-wicket hauls.

Carberry and Vince then saw Hampshire safely to the close on 82-1 heading into tomorrow’s third day.

Hampshire began the day in positive fashion as Berg brought up his fifty with Crane (13) offering useful support.

The former was unfortunate to depart shortly after the milestone, but some late hitting from Edwards (17*) gave the hosts some important momentum as their innings concluded.

The paceman then picked up an early wicket as Hampshire began their bowling effort, with Westwood (12) the man to depart shortly before lunch to see the home-side head to the interval the happier of the two sides.

Warwickshire built nicely following the commencement of the afternoon session to reach 78-1 through Chopra and Laurie Evans (35), however the loss of the skipper to a well-flighted Crane googly soon sparked the dramatic collapse.

The 18-year-old picked up the wicket of former England batsman Jonathan Trott (0) in the same over, and both Sam Hain (5) and Tim Ambrose (0) also found themselves trudging back to the pavilion just three overs later after the duo fell in consecutive balls to see the visitors reduced to 86-5.

Edwards was soon reintroduced to the attack and immediately made an impact once again as he picked up a spectacular three wickets inside two overs. He and Crane then swiftly removed the remainder of the away-side’s lower-order to both finish with five-wicket hauls and see Hampshire head into their second-innings with a lead of 160.

Openers Carberry and Jimmy Adams (6) sought to further their side’s lead into the latter part of the evening session, and although Woakes (1-10) removed the latter in just the fourth over, both Carberry and Vince combined excellently to share a 68-run partnership.

The pair successfully navigated the final overs without loss and ensured Hampshire ended an excellent second day with an imposing lead and both men unbeaten.
