Hampshire Announce Four-Day Squad For Trent Bridge

Full preview of Hampshire's crucial clash with Nottinghamshire in the Specsavers County Championship

MATCH PREVIEW

Nottinghamshire v Hampshire

Specsavers County Championship Division 1

 Saturday 13 – Tuesday 16 August (11:00 – 18:00)

Trent Bridge

Hampshire travel to Trent Bridge with the opportunity to climb off bottom-spot and leapfrog their hosts, currently four points behind Nottinghamshire in Specsavers County Championship Division One.

Hampshire Squad:

Seamer Andy Carter has been selected in Hampshire’s 13-man squad to face Notts and could make his first team debut against his former club. Will Smith captains the side in the absence of James Vince, currently playing in England’s Test series against Pakistan.

All-rounder Ryan McLaren has taken 24 wickets this season and, since Hampshire last played Notts in May, the South African all-rounder has averaged 81 with the bat.

35-year-old Jimmy Adams made his 200th first-class appearance in Hants’ last Championship match. Also Winchester-born, 19-year-old batsman Joe Weatherley could make his third here.

The Opposition:

Notts’ opening pair, Steven Mullaney and Jacob Libby, put on 196 runs for the first wicket partnership in their latest Championship game against Somerset. Mullaney went on to score 165 off 276 balls.

Former Hampshire spinner Imran Tahir took 7-112 in the first innings against Somerset, taking him beyond 750 first-class wickets. Batsman Michael Lumb could also face his former side, having spent four seasons with Hants.

Recent Form:

Hampshire have won three of their last five matches against Notts at Trent Bridge, including a 203-run victory in 2008 and an eight-wicket victory most recently in 2015, which kept Hants in the division.

When the sides met at the The Ageas Bowl in May, Mason Crane (3-19) and Ryan McLaren (3-24) took three wickets each to restrict Notts to 189 in the first innings, teeing up a 69-run victory for Hampshire.

Did You Know?

It’s another big game for us, they’re all big games now. Notts are in a battle with us at the bottom, so it’s a double-pointer. The spirit is very good and we’re confident we can put in a performance there.

It’s vital at this time of year, with good weather and good wickets, that the batsman have got form and confidence. It also allows bowlers to express themselves and take 20 wickets, which is going to be crucial for us at Trent Bridge.

Our form against Notts is solid, and we have to start well and build something. We have a battle ahead of ourselves.

Andy Carter is a former Notts player and knows the conditions – he’s a good addition to the squad, having bowled well in the second eleven this week, and he’s pushing for a place.
