Full preview of Hampshire's match against Yorkshire at the The Ageas Bowl on Wednesday

 MATCH PREVIEW

Hampshire v Yorkshire

Specsavers County Championship Division 1

 Wed 31st August – Sat 3rd September (11:00 – 18:00)

The Ageas Bowl

Hampshire will hope to continue a three-match unbeaten run in the Specsavers County Championship when they take on reigning champions Yorkshire at the The Ageas Bowl in their penultimate home fixture of 2016.

Hampshire Squad:

Both James Vince, who resumes captaincy of the side, and Sean Ervine scored centuries when Hampshire met with Yorkshire in April, and their return to the squad last week helped secure an important draw against Somerset. Since recovering from injury, Ervine has hit two centuries in two innings.

With Liam Dawson selected in England’s ODI squad, newly-signed spinner David Wainwright is included in Hampshire’s 13-man squad, having taken two Somerset wickets and hit 35 not out at Taunton on his full Hampshire debut. Wainwright is with Hants on a match-by-match basis.

Hampshire have seam options in Andy Carter and Brad Wheal, who took career-best figures of 6-51 in a hard-fought victory against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. Carter took five wickets on his Hampshire debut to warrant his selection in the squad.

Lewis McManus’ debut came against Yorkshire in May 2015 – he keeps wicket for Hampshire.

The Opposition:

England Batsman Gary Ballance is 33 runs from 8,000 in first-class cricket, having scored an unbeaten century against Nottinghamshire in his latest appearance for Yorkshire.

Bowler Jack Brooks is the sixth highest wicket-taker in the Specsavers County Championship (37).

Recent Form:

Vince and Ervine both scored centuries when Hampshire travelled to Headingley in April, securing a draw against the reigning champions.

Yorkshire got the better of Hampshire in their last meeting at the The Ageas Bowl, winning by five wickets in September 2015, despite Liam Dawson hitting 140 in the first innings.

Yorkshire are unbeaten in four, winning two of their last three matches in the Specsavers County Championship. Victories against Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire have moved them to second in the Division One standings.

Hampshire are currently eighth, 21 points above Nottinghamshire and just 14 points adrift of Durham.

What The Team Say:

Hampshire Director of Cricket Giles White said: “Vince will captain the side, having readjusted to the set up after being away with England. He’s a high-quality player and hopefully he hits his straps this match, having played so well against Yorkshire earlier this year.

“Sean (Ervine) has done his work in the nets with our batting coach, Tony Middleton, and he’s in a really good place having played exceptionally well at Somerset.

“Over the last three years, Yorkshire have been the stand-out side, but every team in this division is capable of beating each other. We have to focus on our strengths, apply ourselves each day of this match and put some pressure on Yorkshire.”
