Hampshire were defeated by five runs against Somerset in the Royal London One-Day Cup at the The Ageas Bowl
Hampshire were denied a place in the Royal London One-Day Cup quarter finals by a narrow five-run defeat to Somerset at the The Ageas Bowl, despite a valiant chase from the home batsmen.
Jimmy Adams (50) and Will Smith (59) made fifties as Hants pursued the 251-run target set by the visitors, who had been restricted by the bowling of Liam Dawson and Brad Wheal, who were particularly effective whilst taking two wickets each.
Lewis McManus (35) hit the highest knock of his List-A career and Gareth Andrew supplied entertaining big-hitting at the death, but Hampshire fell five runs short of Somerset's total, missing out on qualification by the cruellest of margins.
Somerset won the toss and elected to bat first against Hampshire, whose bowlers were initially pegged back by a formidable opening stand of 108 runs from Mahela Jayawardene (55) and Jim Allenby (69), passing 100 after 20 overs.
Hampshire stamped their authority on the game by claiming key wickets with superb catches, including an athletic take from Gareth Andrew, diving and at full stretch to remove Hildreth (17) and reduce Somerset to 193-5.
Adams had earlier caught Jayawardene impressively, steaming in from the boundary and pocketing a lofted drive from the Sri Lankan batsman, despite losing his footing at the last moment.
Adams’ catch ended Somerset’s opening stand of 108 runs, and effectively ended their domination in the contest, as the home side took five wickets for the next 85 runs.
Brad Wheal (2-36) took the key wicket of Jim Allenby and then Peter Trego (31), who looked dangerous on 69 having scored 40 runs in Friday’s T20 between the sides, as Mason Crane produced an equally accomplished catch at long leg. The visitors were 167-4 in the 34th over.
Ryan McLaren (2-57) and Liam Dawson (2-42) took two wickets each to remove Somerset’s lower order and restrict the visitors to 250-9, enhancing Hampshire’s chances of securing a crucial victory over the first-placed side in the Royal London One Day Cup.
Chasing 251 runs, Jimmy Adams was at the helm of a 49-run opening stand with Tom Alsop, who was trapped at lbw by Gregory’s third ball of the match to halt Hampshire’s progress in the 12th over.
Light rain then threatened to affect the contest as Will Smith joined Adams in the middle and Hampshire moved beyond fifty under gloomy skies at the The Ageas Bowl.
Adams has been in particularly good form in the One-Day Cup, averaging 54 in his last three matches since returning from a bout of illness. Shortly after he’d reached his half-ton, Adams was trapped at lbw by van der Merwe and Hampshire were 77-2 in the 19th over.
Hampshire’s top four batsman were all undone by lbw, as van der Merwe took Wheater (2) and Dawson (22) fell to Waller’s deceiving slow ball.
Smith’s superbly measured fifty put Hampshire right in contention – hitting two boundaries off 77 balls – and the home side needed 73 runs off 54 balls, with McManus adding usefully alongside the experienced Hants batsman.
Lewis McManus compiled his highest List-A knock to date, after Smith's innings was ended on 59, and Gareth Andrew rejuvenated Hampshire’s hopes of securing victory, smashing a huge six and a smart boundary to leave the home side needing 27 off 16 balls.
Despite a maximum from Brad Wheal, Hampshire fell just short of Somerset's 251-run total and narrowly missed out on qualification for the One-Day Cup quarter finals.
