Hampshire Groundsman Nigel Gray Recognised by ECB

Nigel Gray was presented with a special gift before the Royal London ODI between England and Australia

With just one final home game remaining here at the The Ageas Bowl in this 2015 season, Thursday’s sold-out Royal London One-Day fixture between England and Australia was not only a momentous occasion, but one which also marked the final international match at the ground for head groundsman Nigel Gray.

Gray, who is retiring at the end of the season after an exceptional 25-year tenure at the club, has overseen more than 23 international matches during his time with Hampshire and was recognised before the commencement of Thursday’s 50-over match in a special presentation made by ECB Chief Executive Tom Harrison.

After starting out in the traditional surrounds of a small county cricket ground, I have travelled from ‘homely’ to a major stadium hosting international games which cricket also shares with other events such as pop concerts. My time here has been full of many memorable moments, all fun, frustrating, varied and fascinating but never dull. No doubt there will be more twists and turns and I, and my remaining hair, look forward to being part of it for just a little longer.

Having also been named Groundsman of the Year on no less than three occasions, most recently in 2014, as well as being just the third Hampshire groundsman to be awarded a testimonial, Gray is perhaps equally as well-known for his infamous on-field appearance during the final moments of the 2010 domestic T20 competition.

Following this wealth of experience, he will still be on-hand in a consultancy role at the The Ageas Bowl following the conclusion of this season despite taking his retirement.

I hope to be involved in one or two future projects here in terms of cricket facilities and want to be on hand for a while yet to lend support to my successor, Karl McDermott, and the team. Being part of the Hampshire Cricket ‘team’ has been a big part of my life for many years for which I am very grateful.
