Hampshire Host Warwickshire in Opening Match of 2016

The ECB have announced the 2016 fixtures with weekend T20 Blast action back at the The Ageas Bowl

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have today announced the 2016 county cricket fixtures with Hampshire up against Warwickshire in the opening County Championship match of the season at the The Ageas Bowl, starting on Sunday 10 April.

James Vince’s side will be eager to continue their impressive recent record against Warwickshire, having lost only one of the last ten meetings between the two sides in four-day cricket. Hants will face a good examination of the squad’s strength with an away trip to champions Yorkshire in the second match of 2016 before returning to the The Ageas Bowl to face Middlesex, starting on Sunday 1 May.

Hampshire’s quest to reach a record seventh consecutive T20 Finals Day begins with an away clash against Middlesex on Friday 27 May at Uxbridge before hosting the Kent Spitfires in the club’s first home NatWest T20 Blast match on Thursday 2 June. The Hampshire faithful will not have to wait too much longer to witness the ‘El Clasicoast’, with Friday 17 June the date for Hampshire to face local rivals Sussex Sharks at the The Ageas Bowl.

Weekend T20 Blast action returns to the The Ageas Bowl in 2016 with Hants up against Gloucestershire on Saturday 25 June, whilst in a carbon copy of last season, the club will host Somerset in their last NatWest T20 Blast group match on Friday 29 July.

Starting earlier than last season, Hampshire’s Royal London One-Day Cup campaign will commence against Essex Eagles on Sunday 5 June at the The Ageas Bowl, offering England fast-bowler Reece Topley an early opportunity to face his former county. This year’s 50-over competition is divided into two divisions geographically, with Hampshire up against Essex Eagles, Surrey, Kent Spitfires and Somerset at home in 2016.

They are all good teams in Division One of the Championship, but it’s really nice to be at home first and against a team that have been very competitive in the top division for a number of years. A lot of our T20 Blast cricket at the The Ageas Bowl will be mid-summer which is fantastic – warm summer evenings are great for the shorter format and we have a weekend T20 fixture as well so hopefully the attendances will continue to be strong.

Giles White, Hampshire Director of Cricket

The ‘business end’ of the 2016 campaign will see James Vince's men make the trip to the Kia Oval to face newly promoted Surrey for the penultimate Championship match before a home tie against Durham in the last game of the season, starting on Tuesday 20 September.
