Hampshire Return to Four-Day Action

Hampshire take on Somerset at the The Ageas Bowl on Sunday, after a four-week break from the Specsavers County Championship

Hampshire will look to gain ground in Specsavers County Championship Division One when they take on Somerset at the The Ageas Bowl, currently bottom-placed after a four-week break from the competition.

Hampshire Squad:

Will Smith will resume his duties as stand-in four-day skipper in James Vince’s absence, and Lewis McManus keeps wicket for Hampshire with Adam Wheater recovering from injury.

Promising young batsman Tom Alsop has been included in the 13-man squad, which includes South African bowler Ryan McLaren and four-day specialist James Tomlinson.

All-rounder Gareth Berg will hope to have the same impact he did when the sides last met at the The Ageas Bowl, taking four wickets and scoring a total of 124 runs with the bat.

The Opposition:

Somerset captain Chris Rogers is the visitors’ main batting threat, having scored a fine century against Middlesex at the end of May. Former Hampshire batsman Johann Myburgh returns to the The Ageas Bowl.

Australian all-rounder Jim Allenby is capable of producing useful scores with the bat, and is a consistent wicket-taker for the visitors.

Recent Form:

Hampshire were defeated by an innings and 116 runs away at Middlesex in their last County Championship match, but a 69-run home victory over Nottinghamshire previously provides encouragement

Somerset narrowly defeated Surrey by one wicket at Taunton most recently, and find themselves in fifth place in Division One after securing draws with Yorkshire and Middlesex.

Hampshire were defeated by nine wickets in their latest home meeting with Somerset, forced to follow on at the The Ageas Bowl in June 2015.
