Hampshire Suffer Narrow Defeat Despite Magnificent Wheater Century
Adam Wheater hit an outstanding hundred in the Royal London One-Day Cup match against Lancashire
An outstanding century from Adam Wheater (111) was unable to prevent Hampshire from falling to a narrow 29-run defeat against Lancashire in the closely-fought Royal London One-Day Cup match at the The Ageas Bowl.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, opener Ashwell Prince (102) hit a well-made hundred whilst fellow former South African international Alviro Petersen (82) also offered excellent support to see Lancashire post an impressive 301-4 from their allotted overs.
In reply, the brilliant Wheater took the attack to the visitors and with Jimmy Adams (53) and Liam Dawson (52) offering important contributions alongside the wicket-keeper batsman, Hampshire looked to edge closer to the required target.
However, with late wickets falling and the required rate increasing they ultimately came up just short to be dismissed for 272 in a valiant chasing effort.
An efficient start from Chris Wood (2-66) and Fidel Edwards (1-49) restricted the visitors well in the opening powerplay but with all wickets still intact, Lancashire openers Prince and Karl Brown (40) looked to accelerate in the following overs. Both batsmen began to find the boundary regularly, but with Brown dismissed at the hands of the impressive Liam Dawson (1-36) the hosts would have hoped to restrict them further.
However, Prince continued to impress and he was joined by Petersen as the pair guided the total past 150 without further loss.
The duo looked in excellent touch and Prince brought up his century in just the 39th over as the away-side looked to build towards 300.
Wood removed Prince shortly after reaching three figures and as Petersen soon followed, their chances of reaching that mark looked to be diminished at 240-4 with just six overs remaining.
However a late flurry of boundaries from Adam Davies (27*), Steven Croft (25) and Australian all-rounder James Faulkner (16*) saw 61 runs added from the final six overs.
In reply, Hampshire recovered well from the early loss of Michael Carberry (14) through a 100-run second-wicket partnership between Adams and Wheater.
The duo looked in excellent touch and both brought up their half-centuries inside the 21st over to see Hampshire well-placed at 120-1.
An athletic catch in the deep from Karl Brown then saw a valuable innings from Adams come to an end and when skipper James Vince (7) also departed just three overs later, the game looked to be in the balance.
Although another wicket fell, Wheater looked composed at the crease and he brought up his deserved 114-ball century with Hampshire needing 85 runs the final 10 overs.
Joined by in-form all-rounder Dawson, the right-handed pair set about reducing the required rate but as Wheater was removed by the economical Stephen Parry (2-40) the momentum shifted in the away-side’s favour.
Dawson reached his well-made half-century and he showed fantastic fight to deny Lancashire a straight-forward victory but the task proved to be too much as the home-side were defeated with five balls remaining.
