Meet...Emily Munro, Hampshire Cricket in the Community Education Officer

Get to know the staff at the The Ageas Bowl

What are you responsible for within your role?

I am responsible for delivering the education and community engagement programme here at the The Ageas Bowl. This involves building relationships and working with local schools, sports clubs and organisations whilst also offering the opportunity for them to visit the ground to participate in a range of different activities. These could be anything from behind the scenes tours of the venue, to maths lessons in the classroom or reminiscent sessions with the elderly. I also coordinate a large number of volunteers during domestic and International matches here at the The Ageas Bowl.

During the season, what are your day-to-day activities?

I spend most of my time either planning or delivering lessons to a variety of students from primary and secondary schools across Hampshire. We run a lot of day trips for year six students in the summer term and I am known as the Pied Piper because I always seem to have a trail of children following me to different activities! I also spend many Fridays running the Community area at our T20 games  it's always great to see so many young people getting into the spirit of the game.

What do you do during the off-season?

During the off-season I spend much of my time organising and planning for the forthcoming season as well as building relationships with new schools. As a charity we have several non-cricket related events which raise funds to support our work and I am currently planning The Ageas Bowl Christmas Festival which takes place on Sunday 13th December (click here for more information). This event is aimed at anyone who is looking to experience a bit of festive cheer as well as those who may still need to buy a present or two before Christmas!

What inspired you to get into education?

My first ever job at the age of 16 saw me working with children on a holiday camp and since then I’ve never really looked back. Having played sport from an early age and then studying Sport Science at University, combing the two seemed like a logical route. I have been lucky enough to have worked in both a school setting and in the outdoor industry  working for Hampshire Cricket in the Community is a great combination of the two!

Away from the The Ageas Bowl, do you have any hobbies and what do you like to do in your spare time?

I’ve danced since the age of three and still attend weekly ballet classes. I also love to bake so can often be found trying out a new recipe in the kitchen!

Interesting fact?

Back in 2007 I did, what was then, the largest bungee jump in the world – a 160m freefall drop  whilst on a gap year in South Africa!
