Scriven Stars In Academy Win Over South Wilts

Tom Scriven took 5-19 as Hampshire's Academy Won By 8 wickets on The Nursery Ground

Tom Scriven (5-19) and Brad Taylor (61*) made light work of South Wilts CC 1st XI on The Nursery Ground in a comfortable eight-wicket victory for Hampshire Academy on Tuesday in the British Gas Southern Premier Cricket League.

17-year-old Scriven picked up five wickets as he decimated the South Wilts lower order and the Oxford student finished with figures of 5-19 from 7.2 overs.

Taylor, 19, hit 61 not out off 74 balls in Hampshire’s innings, featuring 11 fours, to get the victory in comfortable fashion.

The key for Hampshire was taking wickets at regular intervals.

Josh McCoy picked up two wickets in two balls during the fifth over, and reigning division champions South Wilts never recovered from 21-2.

Taylor dismissed South Wilts’ only set batsman Jack Mynott clean bowled for 40, and after that it was all about Scriven.

The seamer was responsible for six of the last seven wickets, including all of the last five, with a run out adding to his five wicket haul. He had two batsmen out bowled, and had two caught behind by wicketkeeper Matthew Drakeley.

Sam Pittman fought back for South Wilts with 29 not out off 33 balls, but the Hampshire attack stuck to the task in dismissing their opponents for 114 from 42.2 overs.

With 115 needed from the best part of 80 overs, the Academy still needed to keep their concentration, and they delivered a near faultless performance.

Taylor led from the off, repeatedly sending the ball to boundary, but didn’t lose his head and managed the situation ideally.

Felix Organ was stumped for 13, but Scriven came to the crease and followed up his bowling efforts with a useful knock of 36 from 44 balls.

It would have been fitting for Taylor and Scriven to take the Academy home, but the latter fell seven runs short of the target and it was left for Taylor to hit the winning runs.

Hampshire Academy earned 24 points from the home tie, which gives them some breathing space over Ventnor CC at the bottom of the league table.
