Vince 'Deserves First Chance' Says Giles White

Giles White offers his thoughts ahead of England's IT20 series against Pakistan

England prepare for another tough test this week as they face Pakistan in a three match IT20 series, with Hampshire’s James Vince and Reece Topley both in contention to feature for the visitors.

Vince is looking to press his claims for IT20 honours for the first time after being included in an initial 15-man squad for the series. Following another impressive domestic 2015 T20 campaign for Hampshire – one which included breaking the domestic record for the highest individual run total in a T20 season – Hampshire Director of Cricket, Giles White, feels the 24-year-old is ready to contribute at international level.

He’s been prolific in the domestic competition – the highest run scorer ever in a single season too – so he’ll be in good form. He hasn’t had time in the middle and others have but given time I’m sure he’ll do well and he says he is in good form so hopefully it’s a matter of time for him.

The Hampshire skipper featured in Monday’s warm-up match against the UAE and White is hopeful that his captain’s showings in previous seasons could see him given the opportunity to make his debut.

Whether they rest a senior player like (Joe) Root to be able to have a look at James maybe. He’s done very well over the last few years and I think he deserves that first chance - given the opportunity, I think he’ll do well.

He batted at number three in the last game but it depends on the management’s thoughts as to where he fits in their plans and how they’re looking to prepare for the IT20 World Cup in March – it’ll be a telling sign whether he plays or not this series I think.

Eoin Morgan’s side will be looking to claim a limited overs double over the hosts after being crowned 3-1 victors in a hard-fought ODI series against Pakistan earlier this month.

Reece Topley was a key contributor to England’s success after claiming six wickets at an average of just 26.33 in the four-match series.

The paceman was included in the starting eleven in all fixtures and White has been particularly impressed with the way he has led England’s front line.

Reece has been great and I’m delighted that he’s done so well. Watching from a distance, he seems to have taken everything in his stride and he’s shown that he’s a very skilful operator in the short form of the game.

Both Vince and Topley will be hoping to feature in England’s opening IT20 against Pakistan which begins today at 4pm.
