An unbeaten century from James Vince helps Hampshire claim victory over Worcestershire at New Road
An incredible unbeaten century from captain James Vince (107) guided Hampshire to an emphatic 17-run (D/L) and ensured qualification for a record sixth consecutive finals day, as they defeated Worcestershire in the NatWest T20 Blast quarter-final match at New Road.
Vince batted with magnificent flair on the way to his highest ever T20 score and helping guide Hampshire to a commanding 196-4 from their allotted overs.
Worcestershire stumbled to begin their reply with two early wickets falling before bad light halted play with no further action possible to hand Hampshire a crucial win to see them through to finals-day for the sixth occasion in as many years.
Hampshire began their innings positively after being asked to bat first – openers James Vince and Michael Carberry (42) finding the boundary early to provide an early platform for the visitors at 61-0 from the opening powerplay overs.
The duo continued to impress in the following overs with runs flowing throughout and both looked to be nearing half-centuries before Carberry was run-out thanks to some sharp fielding in the deep from Ed Barnard.
Vince went on to reach his fifty, the landmark coming off just 37 balls to guide his side to 106-1 with eight overs still remaining.
The Hampshire skipper combined well with Adam Wheater (32) who also accumulated fluently from the off and they looked set to see Hampshire to a commanding total.
Wheater departed at the hands of Joe Leach (2-40) in the 18th over but with the total at 163-1 with Vince still at the crease and with wickets in hand, the total advanced towards 190.
He reached his deserved century shortly after with a glorious cover drive seeing him beyond three figures and Hampshire to an imposing first-innings total.
An early scalp for Chris Wood (1-10) saw England’s dangerous all-rounder Moeen Ali (10) depart with just three overs gone.
Wood then pulled out a majestic piece of fielding to see the back of Tom Kohler-Cadmore (9) as he was well-short of his ground to be run-out and Hampshire looked to be well on-top with the hosts 39-2 upon the conclusion of the powerplay.
Ross Whiteley (16*) hit two hefty blows to see the score more to 58-2 from 8.1 overs before, with light deteriorating at a rapid rate, play was suspended and eventually abandoned to hand Hampshire a brilliant win to see them advance.
