Summary: Havant beat Hamsphire Academy by eight wickets
Hampshire Academy: 147-9
Havant: 148-2
A 72-run partnership between Academy pair Owen Alsop and Matt King wasn’t enough to stop Hampshire from falling to their second defeat in the ECB Southern Electric Premier League.
It means the youngsters are propping up the table following this eight-wicket defeat on the Rose Bowl Nursery Ground.
Havant gained the advantage of winning the toss and putting the Academy in to bat in damp conditions.
Michael Bates and Ryan Scott fell in quick succession and although Robert Gibson (22), Olly Green (16) and Luke Webb (17) dug in, Havant’s bowlers dictated terms.
At one point Stuart Ransley (3-32) and left-armer Steven Matthews (2-20) sent six wickets spinning for 11 runs as the Academy struggled to 75-8.
But then Alsop (41) and King (32) staged their gallant fight-back, almost doubling the score to ease their side to 147-9.
Left-arm seamer James Haggaty had Havant opener Ben Walker (2) caught behind by Bates at the start of the visitors’ reply but it was some time before the youngsters were able to celebrate their only other wicket.
Peter Hopson (31) perished at 73-2, but Ransley’s unbeaten 62, in conjunction with Richard Hindley (38 not out) saw Havant home.
