MASCARENHAS HITS GLAMORGAN FOR SIX

Dimi Mascarenhas and Stuart Clark played starring roles in Hampshire's 137-run win over Glamorgan in Sunday's Friends Provident Trophy match at Swansea.

It was the county's fourth win from seven matches in the competition this season and leaves them in third place with 10 points.

Mascarenhas, batting at No.7, top-scored with an aggressive 74 off 56 balls as Hampshire posted an imposing 283-6 off their 50 overs after choosing to bat first in overcast conditions.

Australian paceman Stuart Clark then extracted bounce from the pitch to snap up 4-25, including three of the first four wickets, as Glamorgan were dismissed for 146 in 38.5 overs after stumbling to 49-7.

Michael Lumb, who scored 66, shared a crucial third-wicket stand of 85 with Kevin Pietersen (39) which ended when Pietersen was stumped coming down the track to teenage off-spinner Michael O'Shea's first delivery.

Two more quick wickets meant Hampshire hasd slipped from 116-2 to 130-5 before Nic Pothas (62 not out) and Mascarenhas added 131 together. The 47th over, bowled by Alex Wharf, was smashed for 24 runs, Mascarenhas hitting 23 of them, including three of his four sixes.

Glamorgan, still without a win this season, never receovered from losing their first two wickets with the score stuck on 9. Chris Tremlett, who opened the bowling with Clark, took 2-29 off his 10 overs and spinners Shane Warne and Shaun Udal also picked up two wickets apiece.

The last three wickets added 97 runs to make Glamorgan's score more respectable. Dean Cosker, a former Dorset player from Weymouth, finished unbeaten on 39.

"Batting was never easy out there," said Hampshire team manager Paul Terry afterwards. "The wicket was two-paced and the variable bounce made life difficult for the batsmen."

HAMPSHIRE 283-6 (50 overs): Mascarenhas 74, Lumb 66, Pothas 62 not out, O'Shea 2-37. GLAMORGAN 146 (38.5 overs): Cosker 39 not out, Clark 4-25, Tremlett 2-29, Warne 2-32, Udal 2-33. HAMPSHIRE won by 137 runs.

* Hampshire have two matches left as they chase a top-two finish that would put them into the semi-finals. Next Sunday (June 10) they face top-of-the-table Kent at Tunbridge Wells, then they play second-placed Surrey at The Rose Bowl on Wednesday, June 13.
