Hampshire Coach, Jonny Ayling, Leaves the Club
Ayling recorded best bowling figures of 5-12 for Hampshire in a First Class match against Middlesex
Takes up teaching role at local school
Hampshire bowling / assistant coach and former player, Jonny Ayling has announced that he is leaving the club after 25 years of service to the county. He will take up a teaching role at Dauntsey’s School in Wiltshire from April.
The all-rounder played 60 First Class matches and 94 List A games for Hampshire, taking a combined total of 227 wickets and scoring 6,745 runs across six professional seasons. He was also a member of three trophy-winning sides.
Ayling said; “I've been incredibly fortunate to represent the club as a player and, recently, as a coach and have enjoyed every moment of my association.
“I had always intended at some stage to make the transition to working as Cricket Professional at the right school as it would suit my family's needs. The post at Dauntseys is a very exciting opportunity and I'm looking forward to starting full-time at the school in April.
“Hampshire Cricket will always play a significant part in my life. I hope to continue my association with the club in the future, possibly with some coaching during the school holidays, and definitely as a supporter of a wonderful club.”
Portsmouth-born, he made his List A debut for the county against Kent in 1987 and played his maiden First Class match against Oxford University the following season. That year, he helped Hampshire to victory in the Benson and Hedges Cup, defeating Derbyshire by seven wickets at Lord’s.
He later won the 1991 NatWest trophy, taking two scalps - including that of Alec Stewart - and hitting the winning runs, as his side beat Surrey by four wickets. He was also part of the team that beat Kent by 41 runs to claim the 1992 Benson and Hedges Cup.
In 1993 a serious knee injury forced him to retire from cricket and he took on a role as part of the club’s coaching staff. In recent seasons he has been the club’s Second XI coach, having also worked as the Club’s bowling coach.
Hampshire First XI coach, Giles White said; “I would like to thank Jon for all of his hard work over the last few years and wish him and the family well when they embark on life with Dauntsey's School in April.
“We will be sad to see him leave as he has become a highly popular and valued member of the Club and we hope that, in some way, he will continue to be involved with the Club's future.”
The club will be advertising for a replacement for Jonny in due course. In addition, Tony Middleton will move from his role as Academy Director to working with the full squad. Bobby Parks will take over the Academy Director position and former Community Coach with Hampshire Cricket Board, Charlie Freeston will take on the role of Academy Coach.
