Michael Lumb on his way to a score of 75

Hampshire beat Durham by 6 wickets
Durham Dynamos: 205-8 (Wood 2-25, Briggs 1-32)
Hampshire Royals: 207-4 (34.5 ov) (Adams 86, Lumb 75)
A record breaking one-day partnership against Durham between Michael Lumb and Jimmy Adams set Hampshire on their way to a comfortable 6 wicket win against the Durham Dynamos.

The 150 partnership was the highest since Robin Smith and David Gower’s 135 against the same team at Southampton back in 1992. A valuable 20 from James Vince and excellent bowling again from Chris Wood also contributed in the five-star showing from the Royals.

The result takes Hampshire above the Dynamos in CB40 Group C and into third place.

Adams said of top-scoring with 86; “I got a little bit of luck early on, which you always need, I suppose, but it was nice being back with Lumby at the top of the order again. It feels like we’ve – hopefully – resumed normal service.”

Durham won the toss, elected to bat and started strongly hitting 39 off the first five overs, Michael Di Venuto, in particular, adding valuable runs.

However, it wasn’t just the Durham players starring as Hampshire bowler, Wood, finished his first bowling spell of four overs conceding just five runs and taking a wicket for his troubles.

And soon after reaching the three-figure mark in the 21st over, the innings began to dry up as the Royals bowling attack really pressed their opponents. The wickets of Gordon Muchall (10), Ian Blackwell (13) and Dale Benkenstein (33) left the visitors shaking on 141-5 with just seven overs remaining of their innings.

Durham did salvage their batting performance and closed on a reasonable 205-8, with key contributions by Gareth Breese (21) and Ben Stokes (31*). Royals quick, Wood, finished as he’d started, ending with figures of 2-25 from his eight overs; the second wicket being his 10th in this season’s competition.

Jimmy Adams and Michael Lumb put on a record first-wicket partnership of 150

Hampshire’s reply started impressively as Adams and Lumb smashed the Royals to 69-0 off their first ten overs. The partnership continued to blossom with a fine array of shots which led the former to reach his half-century as well as passing a magnificent 300-run marker in CB40.

Lumb followed in his team-mate’s footsteps, bringing up his fifty as the pair continued to play some beautiful cricket, passing 150 in the process.

Adams (86) finally departed when his drive was caught by Breese in the field off the bowling of Benkenstein. After Lumb (75) also fell, it was left to a string of other bit-part players to pick up the final few runs as the home side sealed the win comfortably with 5 overs to spare.

Hampshire now travel to Somerset to play in the LV= County Championship from Monday to Thursday, before turning their attention to Friends Provident t20 Finals Day on home turf on Saturday. Their next CB40 match is at The Rose Bowl against the Leicestershire Foxes on the 17th August.
