POTHAS TON SETS UP HAMPSHIRE VICTORY

Nic Pothas and skipper Shane Warne inspired Hampshire to a convincing 91-run victory over Middlesex at The Rose Bowl in their first Friends Provident Trophy match of the season.

Hampshire, put in to bat, totalled 294-6 off their 50 overs and then dismissed Middlesex for 203 off 44.3 overs.

Pothas, opening the innings, led the way by scoring 114. with eight fours and a six, and sharing a crucial second-wicket stand of 106 off 22 overs with left-hander Michael Lumb who made 59 on his Hampshire debut.

With John Crawley scoring 30 and Jimmy Adams 38, Hampshire reached 254-3 before Pothas' inspired innings came to an end.

The Middlesex reply was going well at 109-2 off 22 overs before Warne brought himself into the Hampshire attack with immediate success, having the dangerous Owais Shah caught at extra-cover for 32 in his first over. Then the leg-spinner trapped Ed Smith lbw for 59 and fizzed a ball past Tim Murtagh's defences in a two-wicket maiden that reduced the score to 143-6.

One run later off-spinner Shaun Udal picked up his second wicket and, despite some lusty blows by tailender Chris Silverwood, Hampshire soon wrapped up victory.

HAMPSHIRE 294-6 (50 overs): Pothas 114, Lumb 59, Adams 38, Silverwood 2-54; MIDDLESEX 203 (44.3 overs): Smith 59, Shah 32, Warne 3-16, Tomlinson 2-43, Udal 2-51. HAMPSHIRE win by 91 runs.
