Wed, Aug 16  Hampshire v Warwickshire

Hampshire's championship hopes suffered a setback when they lost by two wickets to Warwickshire in a last-ball thriller at The Rose Bowl.

A career-best 95 from Chris Benham helped Hampshire make 286 after following on.

Benham put on 159 for the fourth wicket with Dominic Thornley (65) to ensure that Warwickshire would have to bat again, but the visitors only needed 121 from the last 25 overs after Hampshire lost their last seven wickets for 69 runs.

Warwickshire opener Mark Wagh followed up his first-innings 128 with 47 but he became the first of Dimitri Mascarenhas's five victims.

Mascarenhas took three wickets in four balls before he finished with 5-39, his second five wicket haul of the season.

But his efforts were all in vain.

With one over left Warwickshire needed 14 to win but hamstrung left-hander Neil Carter, who was batting with a runner, slog-swept Mascarenhas for six and then drove a four before scrambling the winning run off the last ball.

Fourth-placed Warwickshire's first win at The Rose Bowl in any competition means they are now just two points behind Hampshire, who are now 22 points adrift of leaders Sussex.

Hampshire will face Sussex in their next county match away at Hove starting on Thursday 31st August.
