Match Report: South Wilts v Hampshire Academy

South Wilts v Hampshire Academy
ECB Southern Electric Premier League
Saturday 23 July 2011
Lower Bemerton

Summary: South Wilts beat the Hampshire Academy by 153 runs
South Wilts: 246-7
Hampshire Academy: 93 ao

Hampshire first-teamer, James Tomlinson took four wickets for club side, South Wilts, as his team ran out 153-run victors over the Academy in this ECB Southern Electric Premier League match at Lower Bemerton.

Chasing a target of 247 for victory, the youngest Young Royals side ever fielded was simply steamrollered as they were bundled out for 93.

Ironically, the all-teenage team struck a blow with the very first ball of the day – James Haggaty trapping Tom Cowley leg before.

But then Eddie Abel (48) joined Tom Morton in an 84-run second-wicket partnership.

It was the latter who held centre stage, hitting two sixes and ten fours as he moved imperiously towards his hundred.

But, with a century in sight, he hooked Academy left-armer Tom Barber into Ollie Green’s safe hands in the deep for 96.

South Wilts’ scoring stuttered after that – the Academy culling the post-lunch scoring rate and restricting their hosts to 246-7 after 64 overs.

After the re-start, Tomlinson trapped both Jake George and Wilf Marriott leg before inside four deliveries to have the Academy rocking at 6-2.

Rob Gibson (19) played some nice shots, as did Chris Stone but the lbw’s continued to mount – the Young Royals losing five of their first seven wickets to the respective index fingers of the umpire.

When Morton injured his thumb, South Wilts turned first to Abel, then Hibberd to don the gloves.

Paul Draper (4-3) cut deep into the heart of the Academy, who slumped to 72-8 before Lewis McManus (22 not out) boosted the flagging total.

Tomlinson came back to take the last two wickets and finish with figures of 4-25.
