SWALEC Stadium, Cardiff
Summary
Glamorgan win by 7 wickets
Hampshire: 114-9
Essex: 115-3 (19.2 overs)
A second successive half-century from Jim Allenby helped see Glamorgan to victory against Hampshire in another low-scoring t20 match that will please the Welsh fans but few others.
Home batsman, Gareth Rees did his best to make it interesting, attempting a succession of ill-advised scoop shots over his head, most of which didn’t come off. However, with 5 balls to go, the Swansea-born man did hit the all-important four through cover to end Hampshire’s hopes of a second win in the competition.
On a tricky wicket, where the ball sometimes turned and sometimes didn’t, Hampshire struggled right from the off in their innings, losing the wickets of Lumb (1), Adams (6) and Ervine (7) within three overs.
In truth, Glamorgan’s attack was bowling well, with Robert Croft taking 2-16 in his spell and the pace of Shaun Tait keeping Michael Carberry and Neil McKenzie at bay on the scoring front.
The pair briefly steadied the ship with a partnership of 36, before an attempted sweep shot was played on to McKenzie’s stumps. Hampshire now 54-4 with half the innings already gone.
This brought in new boy Dan Christian who looked good before going for 4 having played straight into the hands of Cosker at deep mid-wicket.
Razzaq looked belligerent before a disastrous over off Dragons dangerman, Jim Allenby, saw both him and Carberry out – the latter top scoring for the Royals with 34 off 48 deliveries.
Cork picked up where Razzaq left off making a quick 15 off 7 but once he was out Hampshire knew they would have to settle for something under 120.
The 114-9 they made was the same score Kent unsuccessfully tried to defend against the Royals last Thursday. New captain, Dominic Cork knew it was always going to be tough.

Carberry top-scored for The Royals with 34
Glamorgan started well with the bat, making a swift 36 without loss – just five overs gone. But then Hampshire got the slice of luck they needed as an Ervine delivery pitched outside leg stump, yet Cosgrove was given lbw. Maybe, just maybe, there was hope.
And if the first wicket was undeserving, the second certainly wasn’t as Dan Christian made an early contender for the catch of the season. His over-head, one-handed dive saw the back of Dalrymple (14).
And Chris Wood made another excellent catch to see Maynard (13) off as he ran 30 yards to collect a ball that must have been lost in the floodlights. By this point, however Glamorgan were 89-3, 26 behind and Hampshire were running out of overs.
With Allenby and Rees at the crease, the win seemed inevitable, before Rees started playing champagne shots without just cause.
Heading into the final over, the hosts still needed five more runs for victory, but Rees made up for his wanton decision-making with the aforementioned boundary.
Hants leave without points, but with their heads held high.
