Summary
Hampshire Royals beat Kent Spitfires by 45 runs
Hampshire Royals: 139 (19.5 overs)
Kent Spitfires: 94 (16.3 overs)
An incredible bowling performance from Danny Briggs helped claim a second consecutive t20 victory for the Hampshire Royals for the first time this season. The youngster took 3 wickets for an incredible 5 runs off his 4 overs.
The figure represents the joint second-best economy rate for any bowler off 4 overs ever.
Special mention should also go to Simon Jones who took 3-20 as his return to full fitness continued to progress nicely.
Having given the Spitfires an unassailable target of 140 to win, the hosts’ wickets tumbled at regular intervals and they finished on 94 all out with three-and-a-half overs to go.
A fluent 44 from Sean Ervine – who also combined nicely with Jimmy Adams (17) to bring up a 50 partnership – was the highlight of the Hampshire batting innings.
In their four-and-a-half overs at the crease together the pair – who have been on fine form themselves recently – stroked the ball around the ground with all the extravagance we’ve come to expect from them.
Although only Nic Pothas (13) and Chris Wood (14) could join them in double figures, the result may go some way to justifying Giles White’s decision to rest Michael Lumb.
With a bowling attack in such good form and an excellent fielding performance to boot, the Royals knew they wouldn’t have to defend a huge score to see them to victory.

Having said that, the result didn’t look certain until nearly the half-way stage in the Spitfire’s innings. With nine overs down the hosts were 56-4 and ahead on the run-rate; but then the collapse began.
First James Hockley was castled by Cork for 6, then the key wickets of Martin Van Jaarsveld (19) and Azhar Mahmood (16) followed. No other Kent player could get past double figures.
With 16.3 overs gone, James Vince ran out Amjad Khan and confirmed a commanding Royals’ victory.
The result helps cement the team’s place in the top four qualifying spots for the quarter finals; another result away to the Essex Eagles on Sunday could see them fighting to win the group!
