Hampshire slip to defeat against Surrey in Twenty20 Cup match at The Oval

HAMPSHIRE SLIP TO DEFEAT

Hampshire were undone by spin as they suffered a six-wicket defeat by Surrey in a rain-affected Twenty20 Cup match reduced to 10 overs each at The Oval on Sunday.

Having won the toss, Hampshire totalled 72-8 after racing to 36 without loss and Surrey reached their target by scoring 75-4 with seven balls to spare.

Left-handers Michael Carberry (20) and Michael Lumb (19) gave Hampshire a fine start before Surrey brought on spinners Nayan Doshi and Chris Schofield.

Left-armer Doshi dismissed Adam Voges, Chris Tremlett and Greg Lamb in returning astonishing figures of 3-6 off his two overs and leg-spinner Schofield dismissed Carberry and skipper Dimi Mascarenhas in his first over. Hampshire lost six wickets for 10 runs in collapsing to 46-6.

Sean Ervine (14) was seventh out at 68 and Nic Pothas was run out off the last ball of the innings.

James Benning (11) and Alistair Brown (31) got Surrey's reply off to a rapid start before Benning and Mark Ramprakash were both run out with the score stuck on 27.

The hard-hitting Brown fell for 31--top score of the match in slippery conditions--and Ricky Clarke was bowled by Tremlett with six runs still needed.

HAMPSHIRE 72-8 (10 overs): Carberry 20, Lumb 19, Doshi 3-6, Schofield 2-16. SURREY 75-4 (8.5 overs): Brown 31, Mahmood 21 not out, Mascarenhas 1-13, Tremlett 1-13.

SURREY won by 6 wickets.

* The result leaves Hampshire with only one point from their first two Twenty20 Cup matches and looking to beat Middlesex in Monday's match at Southgate. Middlesex are also on one point from two matches after their fixture against Sussex at Hove on Sunday was washed out without a ball being bowled.
