LUMB HITS TON AS HAMPSHIRE ARE PIPPED
Hampshire's Michael Lumb scored a magnificent 108, but still finished on the losing side as Sussex edged to a dramatic two-wicket win in Sunday's NatWest Pro40 League match at Hove.
Needing a win to go top of the table, Hampshire totalled a challenging 260-7 off their 40 overs and Sussex replied with 261-8 with seven balls to spare.
Lumb's run-a-ball century, which included 13 fours, was his maiden ton in one-day cricket. The 27-year-old left-hander shared a superb opening stand of 147 with John Crawley which ended in Crawley's dismissal for 61 in the 23rd over.
Lumb and Sean Ervine (56) then added 76 for the third wicket before Sussex hit back in the closing stages. James Kirtley took the last five wickets.
Chris Nash, with a lively 59, and Luke Wright (25) gave the Sussex reply a flying start by slamming 67 runs off the first seven overs before Dimi Mascarenhas trapped Wright lbw. Sussex then slipped from 101-1 to 152-5, with Shane Warne picking up two of the wickets, to put Hampshire in a promising position.
But Chris Adams, whose crucial 70 came off 49 balls with six fours and two sixes, pulled the home side back into contention by sharing a sixth-wicket stand of 61 with reserve wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd which ended when Shaun Udal held a low return catch from Adams.
Hampshire snatched two more wickets to set up a tense finish before Sussex reached their target with two wickets to spare off the fifth ball of the penultimate over. Hodd finished unbeaten on 31 and the 22 extras conceded by Hampshire, including 14 from no-balls, proved crucial.
HAMPSHIRE 260-7 (40 overs): Lumb 108, Crawley 61, Ervine 56, Kirtley 5-36); SUSSEX 261-8 (38.5 overs): Adams 70, Nash 59, Hodd 31 not out, Ervine 2-49, Warne 2-54, Powell 2-54).
SUSSEX won by two wickets.
