'Those Guys are Carbon Copies of Murali!'
Feb 28 2013
Jimmy Adams is hoping his recent trip to Sri Lanka will improve his ability to play spin this season, after facing players in the nets whom he described as being similar to legendary local slow bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan.
In a live, one-hour interview with Unity 101 FM - the South's only Asian and Ethnic radio station - Adams said; "The spin bowlers were amazing! Those guys are the carbon copies of Murali and Ajantha Mendis. They don't quite land it as well as Murali, obviously, but in terms of taking on how they bowl, that was quite a good challenge for us, trying to pick these various bowlers. It was good fun."
Adams, along with team-mates Liam Dawson and Hamza Riazuddin, were at Unity's Southampton studios to talk about their experience, which took place over 10 days at the beginning of February.
And Adams also revealed that the trio, along with fellow Hampshire players Sean Terry and Chris Wood, had taken the opportunity to catch up with a former colleague, Rangana Herath, who played for Hampshire during the first half of the 2010 campaign.
Adams said; "He took us for a catch-up so it was good to see him. Sri Lanka have got a series coming up against Bangladesh in March so he was preparing for that."
But 'Raggy' wasn't the only one to show his face; "Malinga Bandara came down for one day but he didn't turn his arm over." Adams added. "He was mentoring a few bowlers."
And, overall, Adams said the experience had been a positive one for all five of the Royals; "It's a good test - different experience, different conditions, different bowlers, different wickets - it just helps broaden your cricket experience and that gives you a good stable base to push on from... I spent as much time batting as I could before I sweated too much and had to go and have a rest, basically, so it was a good trip."
A video of this section of the interview is included above, but during the extended interview the players also spoke about how they got into cricket, what their favourite form of the game is and how they deal with the fatigue factor of playing so much during the season.
They also took calls from listeners and gave advice before Hamza revealed a secret weakness for cookies. You can listen to the whole interview now by clicking the audio file below:
