Warwickshire Bears: 211

Centuries from Jimmy Adams and Michael Carberry on a swelteringly hot day at Edgbaston set The Royals up for their first win of the season in the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition.

It rounded off an excellent week for the team who are finally back to winning ways in both competitions they've played in.

The scene was set for an exciting day of cricket when a stunning knock from Michael Carberry saw him hit his century off 64 balls, including sixteen 4s and three 6s.
The big man had been replaced as an opener by Michael Lumb, who made his return from winning the Twenty20 World Cup only to leave the field after 2 overs. And Carberry set about proving his opening credentials in extravagant fashion.
He roughed up Boyd Rankin with a four straight over his head, followed by another to gully. And Rankin wasn’t the only one to suffer; in the 7th over, Carter was hit for 20 including a huge 6 over long-off. Hampshire were now 54-1, with Carberry racing to 32.
And for a while it looked like the Lions man couldn’t hit anything else other than a boundary as he hit four 4s in the 8th over.
He went through 50 off 31 balls, and just after the hour, left the field to rapturous applause having put The Royals well on the way; the team now 173-2 with barely 20 overs gone.
Up until this point it looked like Jimmy Adams would play a supporting role, as his very respectable half-century was put in the shade by Carberry. No longer would that be the case.
Sean Ervine and him took Hampshire through the 250 mark with some big hitting, including a 6 from Adams that cleared the scaffolding behind the outfield. Within 34 overs we had a second century of the day as Jimmy hit his 100 off his 85th delivery.
He would eventually finish with 131 off 104 balls, playing all but 3 balls of the innings. Supported, most notably, by Ervine (48 off 29 balls) and Dominic Cork (23* off 12 balls), the team finished on 341, leaving Warks having to score an average of over 8½ runs / over to win.

The home side started as they needed to go on, scoring a four off the first ball, but then the run-rate slowed. Stuttering to 47 off 7 overs, the Edgbaston crowd's hopes were raised with an expensive 10th over which saw Cork being hit for 22.

But then it started raining on their parade... literally. A sprinkler came on in the middle of play, which nearly drenched Michael Carberry. He probably wouldn't have minded having worked up such a sweat at the crease!

But the wickets were tumbling fast for Warks. Diving catches from Rangana Herath and Liam Dawson were added to more simple long-on catches from Lumb and James Vince.

A fantastic bowling performance from Sean Ervine (4-39) also kept The Bears at bay.

Keith Barker put up some temporary resistance, scoring 26 not out, but the result was never in doubt.

It means Hampshire have their first two points in Group C and look to continue on this run into matches against Yorkshire and Scotland next week.
