Winter Watch: Hampshire Duo Star After Sri Lanka Selection

Vince scored 32 in the England Lions match against Bangladesh A

Vince scored 32 in the England Lions match against Bangladesh A

Briggs and Vince picked for next Lions squad after Bangladesh heroics

Hampshire pair, James Vince and Danny Briggs celebrated another good England Lions performance against Bangladesh A with selection for the squad to tour Sri Lanka starting next Friday.

The duo were named in a revised 15-man squad for their five match One-Day Series to be played in Dambulla, Welagedera and Colombo.

The announcement came less than 24 hours before Vince hit a well-balanced 32 (33 balls, 2x4, 1x6) and Briggs took 2-16 from four overs in a T20 International in Mirpur.

The Lions, having made 143-6, skittled their opponents for 111 to claim a 32-run win in the first of a two match Series against Bangladesh A. The second game will be played on Monday.

After that fixture, several of their team-mates (Lancashire’s Simon Kerrigan, Essex’s Tymal Mills, Warwickshire’s Boyd Rankin and Surrey pair Jason Roy and Tom Maynard) will return to their counties to be replaced by more established full squad players Jade Dernbach, Craig Kieswetter, Samit Patel and Chris Woakes

If they impress there is a chance Hampshire’s young Royals could be included in the full squad’s upcoming One-Day Series against Pakistan in UAE next month – a Series Royals team-mate Shahid Afridi looks likely to be involved in having now turned down the opportunity to play in the Bangladesh Premier League.

ECB National Selector Geoff Miller said: "The Sri Lanka tour will provide a further opportunity for us to assess players in the 50-Over format before we finalise selection for the senior team’s One-Day Series against Pakistan in UAE next month. Jade Dernbach, Craig Kieswetter, Samit Patel and Chris Woakes will be keen to use this tour to press their claims for a place in our One-Day Squad as will the other Lions players who recently completed the tour of Bangladesh."
