Adams Notches Valuable Half-Century as Hampshire Build Important First-Innings Foundations

Hampshire finished a healthy 219-4 to end day one of the LV= County Championship clash against champions Yorkshire

A determined batting display from Hampshire’s top order, including a half-century for Jimmy Adams (52), laid the platform for a big score in a rain effected first day of the LV= County Championship match against champions Yorkshire at the The Ageas Bowl.

Liam Dawson (47*) and Will Smith (46) also offered important contributions for the hosts as the home-side battled well in testing conditions to finish on 219-4 to end day one.

Hampshire’s crucial four-day game - their last home fixture of the season – was initially delayed until 11am after heavy overnight rain left the outfield in no fit state for play.

Yorkshire skipper Andrew Gale won the toss and elected to bowl first on a green pitch, bringing Michael Carberry and Adams to the crease for the hosts.

The first hour saw 28 runs scored, with the two openers keen to not give their wicket away in difficult batting conditions but as the morning session drew to a close, both batsmen looked to accumulate at a quicker rate with Hampshire finishing 55 without loss at lunch.

After the interval, it took just three overs for Yorkshire to make the crucial breakthrough. Carberry, attempting to continue his stoic defence from the first session, feathered behind to wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd after a fierce delivery from Brooks, bringing Hampshire skipper James Vince to the middle.

However, Vince – making his 100th first-class appearance for Hampshire – departed shortly after as former England all-rounder Tim Bresnan snuck a straight delivery through the skipper’s defences.

The inclement weather then set in again to bring the players off for a short delay with the score on 82-2, halting the visitors’ progress right as they were beginning to get a grip on the conditions.

When play restarted, Smith assisted Adams in accelerating the rate – and in the 39th over of the day, Adams reached his deserved half-century, flicking Bresnan off the legs for a four in the process.

However, he could only add two more to his team’s total before Steven Patterson claimed him as his first wicket, getting the ball to seam away and drawing an outside edge.

Dawson and Smith saw Hampshire through a difficult spell of pressure before tea and battled well to see the home-side reach a very healthy 153-3 at the break.

Hampshire continued to slowly but surely steer themselves into a strong position in the first ten overs after tea, with Smith and Dawson bringing up their fifty-run partnership.

Smith fell agonisingly short what would have been a classy half-century, tickling one down the leg side to depart however Sean Ervine (26*) set about building a quick partnership of his own with the resolute Dawson.

Hampshire picked up their first bonus point of the game when they passed 200 with just over 15 overs to go in the day, and some lusty blows from Ervine helped to accelerate the scoring rate before yet more rain forced the players off to bring a premature end to the opening day.
