Aneurin Donald: Injury Update

The Hampshire batsman will miss the remainder of the 2021 season due to injury

Hampshire Cricket can announce that Aneurin Donald will miss the remainder of the 2021 season due to injury.

After suffering an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury in December 2019, which required a 14-month period of rehabilitation, Donald reported a knee twist when playing an internal inter-squad fixture in March 2021. Subsequent scans showed that his ACL graft had unfortunately failed – as can often be the case with injuries of this nature – and he had suffered a recurrence of his original injury.

Following consultation with two independent orthopaedic knee surgeons, an initial discussion and attempt to treat the injury conservatively was sought. However, a further unstable episode led to the requirement of ACL reconstruction surgery, which has since been carried out successfully by leading London-based knee specialist, Andy Williams.

Donald will now undertake a new long-term rehabilitation plan from this new surgery which will see him side-lined for the remainder of 2021.

Most ACL failures occur when a new unstable episode disrupts the repaired ligament graft. In Aneurin’s case, the scans showed that his repaired graft was slowly failing – ultimately you rely on the harvested graft tissue repairing and being able to withstand the demands cricket places on it.

It is really unfortunate Aneurin finds himself back in an ACL rehabilitation programme and these are inevitably long, drawn-out processes but he is the model professional and continues to go above and beyond. Whilst he now unfortunately faces a significant spell on the side-lines, we are targeting a full return to play in 2022 and are absolutely confident Aneurin will return despite this setback.

James Clegg, Hampshire Cricket Head of Sports Science & Medicine

I’m devastated to be back on the side-lines following my reinjury; it’s a certainly a tough pill to swallow after such a long rehabilitation process that led to me being back in a position to feature on the pitch at the start of this pre-season.

Unfortunately, after trying to continue without a functioning ACL, a scan showing a tear in my Meniscus a few weeks later finally led to surgery being the only remaining option. Fortunately, with thanks to Andy Williams and his team at the Fortius Clinic, my second surgery was a success, and I have already begun to dive into the rehabilitation process once again with a full recovery fully expected.

I want to specifically thank all of the science and medicine team at the club who have done everything in their power to help me through this process and continue to do so. To the fans, I’m sorry I won’t be back on the park this year and able to contribute to the Club, and I am ever grateful for the support shown to me since I’ve made the move down south.

Finally, to all of the people who have helped me throughout, from teammates and coaches, to family and friends, thank you. I can’t wait to be back out in the middle next season and better than ever!

Aneurin Donald
