Edwards Heroics Helps Hampshire Close on Vital Victory

Visitors need 111 more runs on the final day to beat Nottinghamshire

A fiery burst of fast bowling from Fidel Edwards boosted Hampshire’s hopes of forcing the victory they need to have any chance of prolonging their stay in the First Division of the LV= County Championship.

The 33-year old West Indian added figures of four for 57 to his opening day haul, to give him match figures of ten for 145. Edwards changed the complexion of the day by dismissing Chris Read, Billy Root and Stuart Broad within the space of seven deliveries to help dismiss Notts for 185 in their second innings.

Needing exactly 200 to win, Jimmy Adams and Michael Carberry began positively in their run chase and raced to 89 without loss at stumps, with Adams on 46 and Carberry on 37. They will require a further 111 runs on the final day and keep their fingers crossed that Yorkshire can extend their time in the Fisrt Division by defeating Sussex at Headingley.

It’s been a brilliant day really. You look back over the course of it and everyone has contributed. It’s been a brilliant team effort and it’s put us in a strong position, so I’m delighted with the way it went.

Holding a first innings advantage of only 14 runs, Notts were indebted to Brendan Taylor’s 90, second time around, made in the face of some hostile bowling from Edwards.

His partner, Jake Libby, fell to the speedster for the second time in the match and then Steven Mullaney perished cheaply against Ryan Stevenson, after launching Gareth Berg for a huge six.

Berg responded by removing both Samit Patel and Riki Wessels before Edwards’ returned to the attack with devastating effect.

Taylor, the former Zimbabwe international, scored his 1,000th run of the season when reaching 20 and showed his intent by lifting Liam Dawson for a mighty six in the first over of the afternoon.

Using his feet against the spin of Liam Dawson, Taylor fell just short of his fourth Championship century of the summer by failing to clear James Vince at mid off.

Ryan McLaren gained his first two wickets of the match in spectacular fashion, knocking over the stumps of both Jake Ball and Harry Gurney.

Earlier, Hampshire’s last two wickets added a further 28 runs during the opening half hour of the day, before Stuart Broad ended the innings by having Gareth Berg caught down the leg side for 72.

Harry Gurney, who returned figures of four for 70, ended a match-changing ninth wicket partnership of 123 by getting Ryan McLaren to play on for 52.
