England Women Seal Series Win At The Ageas Bowl

Fran Wilson hit 43 to help England defeat Pakistan by 35 runs in their IT20 at the The Ageas Bowl

Fran Wilson marked her international comeback with an unbeaten 43 as England wrapped up a NatWest T20 series win against Pakistan with one game to spare, in front of a 6,000-strong crowd at the The Ageas Bowl.

Wilson, a 24-year-old Middlesex batsman whose last appearance came in January 2011, glued together a staccato innings on a slow track, with wickets regularly falling at the other end.

Jenny Gunn, Natalie Sciver and 17-year-old spinner Sophie Ecclestone then took two wickets each as England won by 35 runs, with some outstanding fielding.

After England had won the toss and elected to bat, Lauren Winfield started off in confident style – hitting three of the first four balls to the boundary.

Opening partner Tammy Beaumont never quite looked settled at the crease – despite her recent form of 424 runs in four innings across the formats – and after getting away with a caught and bowled chance was lbw to debutant Aiman Anwer.

Captain Heather Knight came in and slapped the game’s first six down the ground, but then fell stumped as Pakistan bowled tightly on a slow track and showed a significant improvement in their fielding.

Sciver continued the steady flow of wickets when she holed out to long on, before Danielle Wyatt was the victim of a stunning caught and bowled by Bismah Maroof – who ended with impressive figures of two for 19.

Wilson was a steadying hand for her team, facing 39 balls and hitting three boundaries in comfortably her highest England score.

Danielle Wyatt set the tone for England’s performance in the field as she ran out Sidra Ameen with a direct hit from point.

Amy Jones then produced a smart piece of wicket-keeping, a low catch standing up, to see off BismahMaroof off the bowling of Sciver.

Jones was in the action again when she easily held a steepler from Javeria Khan off the bowling of Knight to break the highest stand of the match.

Sidra Nawaz and Asmavia Iqbal both departed in quick succession, and Ecclestone then bowled bothSana Mir and Aiman Anwer.

Gunn, who ended with stunning figures of two for seven, and Hazell, two for 15, ended the contest tomaintain England’s 100% record against Pakistan this summer. They will aim to complete a second consecutive 3-0 clean sweep in the last game of the series in Chelmsford on Thursday.
