First Team Winter Injury Update

The latest on Hampshire's first team players who suffered injuries in the closing stages of last season

Lewis McManus

Lewis McManus sustained an injury during day two of Hampshire's Specsavers County Championship fixture against Lancashire back in August.

After subsequent scans and consulting with a specialist, it was determined that Lewis has sustained a fracture to the index finger of his right-hand and he underwent successful surgery.

Lewis' injury has now fully healed 13 weeks on, and he returned to training earlier this month.

Rilee Rossouw

Rilee Rossouw suffered discomfort on his right-hand following the pre-match warm ups of Hampshire's NatWest T20 Blast match against Essex Eagles in August.

Subsequent scans revealed that the left-hander had sustained a fracture to the index finger of his right-hand and he underwent successful surgery on Thursday 10th August.

Similar to Lewis McManus' injury, Rilee's finger has now fully healed and he has been cleared for all cricket activities - he is currently participating in the Bangladesh Premier League.

Brad Taylor

Brad Taylor sustained a lateral ligament sprain to his right ankle during a practice session at the The Ageas Bowl in July.

After wearing a protective boot in the weeks following the injury, Brad's has now fully recovered and he is currently representing Petone Cricket Club, Wellington, as part of England's Player Placement Programme.

Ryan Stevenson

Ryan Stevenson had a relapse of lower back pain in May 2017 related to a recurrence of an incomplete stress fracture. After much consultation, the decision was for Ryan to have a minor surgical procedure, which he is currently rehabilitating from.

Ryan is making good progress in his recovery and will begin a graduated return to bowling programme in the early months of 2018.

Reece Topley

After undergoing scans in July, it was determined that seamer Reece Topley had sustained a recurrence of a stress fracture to his back.

Reece was shut down for a six week period following the injury, and after consulting with a specialist, a decision was made to approach his recovery conservatively with no surgery required.

Several months on, the injury is healing excellently, allowing Reece to continue to work towards returning to full fitness - the latest step in this recovery has seen him included in England's Pace Programme which continues throughout the winter.

Kyle Abbott

Kyle Abbott suffered a minor ankle injury during Hampshire's final fixture of the 2017 season. He has fully recovered and is currently with the Bangladesh Premier League's Khulna Titans.

Ian Holland

Ian Holland sustained an injury to his right shoulder in the penultimate game of the 2017 season, whilst diving in the field.

Despite playing the last game of the season and three games in Australia, subsequent scans have revealed internal damage within the shoulder.

Ian is currently in Melbourne, but is liaising with the Hampshire Cricket medical staff and world class practioners from Australia to determine the best course of action to ensure a full recovery for pre-season and the start of the 2018 season.
