Gareth Berg Named Players’ Player of the Year

Michael Carberry, Fidel Edwards, Mason Crane & Sean Ervine also took home awards

All-Rounder Gareth Berg was the big winner at the 2015 Hampshire Cricket End of Season Awards Evening.

The annual event, which celebrates the club’s achievements from the season, took place in the Ageas Ballroom at the new Hilton Southampton – The Ageas Bowl on Sunday 27 August.

34-year old Berg, who joined Hampshire from Middlesex ahead of this season, won both the Ageas Players’ Player of the Year and the Paris Smith Fans’ Player of the Year. Berg pipped Liam Dawson (second-place) & James Vince (third-place) to win the Paris Smith Fans’ Player of the Year.

Berg was Hampshire’s most consistent wicket-taker throughout the season and he particularly shone in the LV= County Championship, taking 42 wickets at an average of 28. With almost 700 Championship runs, Berg proved invaluable in the lower-order – his brilliant 99 against Sussex at Hove a particular highlight, helping Hampshire secure their first Championship win of the season.

West-Indian paceman Fidel Edwards, who finished the campaign with an outstanding 45 Championship wickets in eight matches at an average of 20.8, won the Marston’s Bowler of the Year in his first year at the club.

The 33-year old, who signed a new one-year contract to stay at the The Ageas Bowl next season, picked up a ten-wicket haul for the second time in his career in Hampshire’s crucial win over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Michael Carberry’s consistent runs at the top of the order was enough to see him named the Marston’s Batsman of the Year. The 34-year old accumulated 1129 runs in the Championship and the left-hander finished the season as the fifth leading runs-scorer in Division One.

18-year old leg-spinner Mason Crane became the youngest Hampshire player to take a five-wicket haul in the Championship in the victory over Warwickshire at the The Ageas Bowl, and he took home the Hilton Southampton – The Ageas Bowl Breakthrough Player of the Year award.

The Capital FM Clubman of the Year Award, which aims to reward on and off-field commitment to the club, went to Sean Ervine. The 32-year old received a special mention for his commitment to the club’s official charity Hampshire Cricket in the Community.
