Harry Dearden hit 81 runs and Dan Smith took 3-22 as Hampshire defeated Surrey by 62 runs
Hampshire secured a 62-run victory over Surrey in the Second Eleven Trophy as Harry Dearden scored 81 runs off 97 balls and bowler Dan Smith took 3-22 on the Nursery Ground.
Liam Dawson (45) built a 99-run partnership with Dearden a day after dazzling with the ball in England’s T20 victory over Sri Lanka, and first-team spinner Mason Crane (3-52) produced an impressive all-round performance in a resounding home triumph.
Dearden’s 81 set up victory for Hampshire, hitting 10 boundaries and one six during 132 minutes at the crease, after the home side found themselves on the back foot when opening partner Joe Weatherley (4) was caught by Matt Dunn from Matt Pillans’ bowling.
Dawson (45) supplied a crucial knock after Felix Organ (22) was taken by James Burke, and the England man’s 99-run partnership with Dearden swung the game in Hampshire’s favour.
Surrey restricted Hampshire through Guramar Virdi (4-52), who removed Dawson and Dearden to leave the home side on 170-4, then Jake Goodwin (20) and Brad Taylor (17) in the same over.
At 209-6, Ben Duggan (25) and Mason Crane (35 off 24 balls) helped Hants on to 281-8 – Griffiths (1*) and Ellis (7*) finishing unbeaten.
Hampshire set a compete total, Hampshire then assumed a commanding position in the game with the ball, reducing Surrey to 25-4.
Wicket keeper Ed Ellis caught Oliver Bachelor (9) as Dan Smith found an edge in the fourth over, then Ellis combined with Joe Weatherley to run out Arun Harinath in the eighth over.
Smith went on to play a central role in Hampshire’s victory, taking 3-22 as he removed Batchelor and James Burke (0), then ran out Ryan Patel (65) – a key wicket – to halt Surrey’s progress as they climbed to 168-6.
Brad Taylor deserved credit for bowling Oliver Pope, who was going well on 32, and helping reduce Surrey’s strike rate as the visitors threatened to compete with Hampshire’s total.
Mason Crane (3-52) completed an excellent all-round performance and helped bowl Surrey out with six overs to spare.
Crane trapped Matt Pillans at lbw, then removed Dunn and Freddie Van Den Bergh, who was caught by Dawson as Surrey’s chase ended at 219 all out – Hampshire securing a 62-run victory in the Second Eleven Trophy.
