Summary: South Wilts beat Hampshire Academy by eight wickets

The Hampshire Academy were defeated by eight wickets against league champions South Wilts, despite a positive batting performance from Hants’ Chris Searle (44) in the British Gas Premier League match at Lower Bemerton.

Bowler Searle hit 44 with the bat to help boost Hampshire’s total to 186 runs, before dismissing South Wilts opener Jake Winter as he approached his half-ton.

South Wilts’ Jack Mynott hit an unbeaten 66 to catch Hampshire’s total and bowler Stephen Booth crucially took 3-21.

Hampshire openers Ben Duggan (20) and Joe Weatherley (24) led the away side past 50, steadying the ship after an early blow; losing Miles Kantolinna (1) to Booth in the first over.

Duggan was then caught by Joe Cranch from bowler James Hibberd, before Booth took a second wicket, this time trapping Weatherley at lbw.

Patrick Holly (22) and Harry Gadd (32) scored useful runs, projecting Hampshire from 86-6 to 144-7, before Searle added a further 44 to the total, looking in good touch before being run out by South Wilts’ Winter.

With South Wilts requiring 186, Josh McCoy (1-30) supplied an early breakthrough for Hampshire, bowling William Wade (7).

Searle then dismissed Wade’s partner, Winter (46), as he approached his 50 and, at 63-2, the match was still in the balance.

Mynott’s (66*) innings effectively decided the game though, scoring six boundaries in an excellent 66 and finishing unbeaten alongside James Hayward (48*); a partnership of 124 handing South Wilts an eight-wicket victory.
