Hampshire Begin Caribbean Super50 Competition Against Barbados Pride

Hampshire slip to defeat in first pre-season competition fixture despite determined batting partnership between Weatherley & Ervine

Thursday 1st February saw the start of Hampshire’s pre-season campaign in the Caribbean Super50 tournament with a young and exciting team to face hosts Barbados Pride at the 3Ws Oval, Barbados.

The hosts put out a squad closely resembling the current West Indies ODI & Test squad including: Kraigg Brathwaite, Shai Hope, Jonathan Carter, Roston Chase, Ashley Nurse, Carlos Brathwaite, Miguel Cummins and Kemar Roach, joined by ex-West Indian Test bowler, Sulieman Benn.

Hampshire, led by former club captain Jimmy Adams, were put into bat first with Dickinson’s (9) wicket falling in the fourth over to Miguel Cummins.

Barbados’ bowlers kept their attack tight with the ball and trusted their spinners Kraigg Brathwaite & Ashley Nurse early in the innings, earning them the wickets of both Alsop (12) and Adams (3).

With Hampshire 29-3, Weatherley (51) & Ervine (63) steadied the ship and created a 112-run partnership, before both wickets fell in quick succession, bringing in McManus (47) & Taylor (20) to continue the attack, leaving the visitors on 227-7 after their 50 overs with Miguel Cummins the pick of the bowlers with three wickets from the first innings.

The hosts were put under pressure from the start of the second innings, as Wheal took Stoute (2) in just his second ball.

Hampshire’s seamers Edwards & Wood also picked up one each, taking K. Braithwaite’s (12) & S. Hope’s (34) wickets, leaving the hosts 63-3 in the sixteenth over.

Adams' team looked hopeful following the seam attack removing Barbados' top three before the Pride then unleashed stellar batting performance from both Carter (92*) & Chase (85*), putting on an unbeaten 168-run partnership, leading Barbados Pride to a seven-wicket victory after 46.3 overs.

Hampshire face T&T Red Force in their next tournament fixture on Sunday (3rd), with West Indians internationals likely to feature including: Evin Lewis, Sunil Narine, Denesh Ramdin, Shannon Gabriel & Jason Mohammed.

Hants will be keen to kick into winning form following some positive signs from their challenging contest against Barbados Pride.
