Hampshire Confirm 2019 La Manga Club Pre-Season Tour

The Club's first-team players and coaching staff will head to the resort as part of their preparation for the 2019 campaign

Hampshire Cricket are pleased to confirm the team will visit La Manga Club for this year’s pre-season tour.

In partnership with La Manga Club Sports & Leisure, the Club’s first-team players and coaching staff will head to the resort as part their preparation for the 2019 campaign.

A 23-strong travelling party will fly out to La Manga Club on Thursday 7th March as part of a week-long training programme consisting of outdoor practice and strength & conditioning work.

The squad will also contest two 50-over fixtures during the trip, facing Northamptonshire in two 50-over matches on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th March, before returning to the UK on Friday 15th March.

We really enjoyed our time over in Barbados in previous years and have a lot of great memories but we’re looking forward now after choosing to go to La Manga Club. I visited the resort in October and was really impressed with what I saw, it’s a fantastic facility and everything suggests it will be a really beneficial visit.

Each time we go on these trips, they’re relatively short but you want to maximise what you can get out of it in terms of cricket. The practice and playing facilities, accommodation and travel are logistically good and we’ll look to get as much cricket in as we can in that time, ahead of coming back to the The Ageas Bowl where hopefully the wickets will be in good shape if we have kind weather in March.

We’ve currently got a groundsman helping out with the wickets so there’s a nice connection already too. We see this as a future partnership as well as a great place to play some cricket and develop some young cricketers over the winter months moving forward.

Regularly used for warm-weather training breaks by county and international teams as well as being a regular venue for ICC European tournaments, La Manga Club is widely regarded as the ‘home of cricket’ in Spain, and the resort further enhanced its facilities last year by launching the European Cricket Performance Centre, which recently opened the first of its new grass wickets.

Covering an area three times the size of Monaco in Murcia, south-east Spain, La Manga Club has been designed to help international teams and counties with the development of players and coaches, with Cricket Ireland and Cricket Scotland already among its list of regular visitors since it opened last spring.

The extensive facilities include six first-class grass pitches and two artificial wickets on two existing grounds, plus 23 grass and five artificial net lanes. In addition, there is also a specialist grass fielding, catching and wicket-keeping areas.
