Hampshire Cricket College Students Fire In South Africa

Second year students take in the best of what Cape Town has to offer on trip to the African continent

Students from the Hampshire Cricket College recently embarked on an exciting 10-day tour to Cape Town, where they participated in a plethora of activities as well as playing competitive matches.

The opening days of the tour involved a trek up Signal Hill and a trip to Newlands to catch all the action on Day Four as England made it a level series in Cape Town.

After all of the fun it was time to get down to business. The College took part in a full training session at Green Point Cricket Club, in the shadows of Newlands as well as a Township tour and a cable car up Table Mountain.

The first encounter was a 50 over affair vs South African College High School. The fixture ended in a convincing five-wicket win for Hampshire. They’d bowled the opposition out for 126 and chased it down in 20 overs. The chase was led by opener Storey, who top scored with 54 runs.

Having won their opening fixture, spirits were high as the College went up against Rondebosch High School in a 120 over declaration game.

Batting first, Hampshire could only muster up a score of 151, Angus Brown top scoring with 58. The opposition would then succeed in chasing down the target, reaching it within 35 overs as the second game of the tour ended in a five-wicket defeat.

Yet another declaration game would then follow, Hampshire rattled through the Bishop’s College lineup bowling them out for 51, Brown (5-5) and Allen (3-25) the pick of the bowlers. The college would go on to win their third game of the tour by eight wickets.

Both teams then took part in a T20 match in which Bishop’s College were victorious by seven wickets. Then followed the final game of the tour, a 50 over match against Wynberg High School.

Hampshire had managed to restrict the opposition to 163 and after seeming down and out in the early stages of their reply at 15-4, a seriously impressive 100-run partnership between Cavener and Brown propelled the College to a four wicket victory meaning they had ended their tour in winning ways. An outstanding effort across the five games given unfamiliar conditions.

The trip was finished off with a safari experience, a expedition to Robben Island and visiting the Penguins at Boulder Beach before heading back to the UK to continue their studies.

Hampshire Cricket College is for 16-18-year olds to study a BTEC in sport whilst training their Cricket skills. For any prospective students, the next open evening takes place on Tuesday 25th February at the The Ageas Bowl from 6pm-8pm.
