Report of Hampshire's Royal London One-Day Cup match against Surrey at the The Ageas Bowl
Tom Alsop (116) scored his first century for Hampshire to help secure a thrilling 6-run victory over Surrey in the Royal London One Day Cup at the The Ageas Bowl.
Alsop hit 116 runs off 121 balls in an assured innings, before Gareth Berg sealed the win by taking 4-64 - his best List A figures for the club - striking twice in a dramatic final over.
Sean Ervine contributed an excellent half-ton and James Vince returned to Hampshire action by hitting 41 off 38 balls to set up the triumph, which was sealed with enthusiastic work in the field.
Having been on international duty with England, Vince resumed his role as Hants skipper by steering the home side back on track after Hants lost an early wicket.
The England batsman was caught at midwicket off the bowling of Rampaul, but 20-year-old Alsop continued to make quite an impact in just his fourth List-A match, surpassing his highest score and registering his first ton for Hampshire.
Ervine - who has skippered the side in Vince's absence - continued his impressive form with the bat, reaching his fifty off 63 balls in an assured innings, before he was trapped at lbw as Tom Curran struck again.
Batty dealt Hampshire a significant setback by picking up two quick wickets, but the home side climbed to 289-8 from their 50 overs as Gareth Andrew and Lewis McManus added useful runs for the second day in a row.
Looking to prevent Surrey from scoring their 290-run target, Hampshire quickly made progress in the field, as Berg caught and bowled Steven Davies (0) before he and dangerman Jason Roy had settled.
A flurry of wickets changed the game.
Andrew and Liam Dawson dismissed the key batting pair of Kumar Sangakkara (33) and Jason Roy (29) to put Hampshire in the driving seat, rocking Surrey’s chase and leaving the away side on 69-3 after 14 overs.
When Arun Harinath (3) made an elaborate attempt to scoop over Ervine in the slips, and instead handed the Hampshire man a simple catch, Dawson had taken 2 wickets for four runs.
Superb bowling from the Hants attack restricted Surrey to four runs an over and, with 20 overs left, the away side required 157 runs.
However, Zafar Ansari (62) and Ben Foakes (72) scored over 100 together, both making fifties, and the match was in the balance when they took Surrey beyond 200.
The match seemed to have turned back into Hampshire's favour when Mason Crane and McManus combined brilliantly as Foakes was stumped, after Tino Best had crucially clean-bowled Ansari, to leave the visitors pegged back on 219-6.
Sam Curran frustrated Hampshire with the bat alongside older brother Tom, as the game swung once more, but Gareth Berg delivered the goods. With Surrey requiring 50 runs off the last 6 overs, he and Best restricted the strike rate of the Surrey siblings before Berg removed both.
In a dramatic final over, Dawson caught Tom Curran on the boundary to a roar from the The Ageas Bowl crowd and Berg bowled Gareth Batty with the following ball.
Stuart Meaker and Ravi Rampaul were unable to find the winning runs, as Berg displayed experience and nerves of steel to secure Hampshire's second Royal London One Day Cup victory with three excellent final deliveries.
