Hampshire Trio Commit Future With New Contract Extensions

Tom Alsop, Joe Weatherley and Brad Wheal have all signed new long-term deals with the Club

Hampshire Cricket are delighted to announce that Tom Alsop, Joe Weatherley and Brad Wheal have all signed new contract extensions, committing their future to the Club.

The trio have put pen to paper on new contracts, extending their current deals that were due to expire at the end of next season.

23-year-old Alsop, who graduated through Hampshire’s youth setup, made his first-class debut for the Club in 2014 before enjoying a breakthrough 2016 campaign, during which he struck more than 1,200 runs across all formats, including maiden four-day and 50-over centuries.

The left-hander’s development continued in 2017, but it was the most-recent 2018 campaign that saw him establish a regular place in James Vince’s side. Alsop offered key contributions with the bat in all formats, no more so than in this year’s Royal London One-Day Cup triumph where he totalled 248 runs in five innings, including a crucial knock of 72 at the top of the order in the competition final at Lord’s.

Having worked hard on his wicket-keeping in recent years - particularly over the last two seasons – Alsop also took over the gloves midway through last season, pouching 33 catches and two stumpings.

It’s fantastic to get that security and know that my future is here at my home Club. Winning a trophy and being part of a strong Championship side in 2018 was great and it’s been nice to play and be able to contribute with the bat and with the gloves. Hopefully I can continue to contribute more and more on the pitch moving forward and build on this year heading into 2019.

Weatherley is also product of Hampshire’s youth set-up having represented the county from an early age and the right-hander also featured prominently for England at age-group level, captaining England U19s in 2015.

After making a handful of appearances following his first-team debut in 2016 and subsequently in 2017, the 21-year-old impressed in a regular spot at the top of the order during the 2018 season.

Weatherley contributed 772 runs across all formats this year, including his first centuries for the Club in both the Specsavers County Championship and Royal London One-Day Cup competitions.

I’m delighted to extend my contract here at Hampshire. It’s been widely talked about that last year was a difficult one for batting but it’s been a summer I look back on and I feel I learned a lot in that time. Following on from the success we had in the One-Day Cup, I’m really looking to continue building on that and that’ll be a key focus for myself and the team over the next couple of years.”

Joe Weatherley

22-year-old Wheal arrived at the The Ageas Bowl 2015, moving to the UK from his native South Africa after being spotted by Hampshire’s former First XI Coach, Dale Benkenstein.

The seamer impressed in his four appearances during his debut season before coming into his own in the 2016 campaign as a strike-bowler, claiming 34 wickets at an average of just 26.42 across all formats whilst also making international ODI and IT20 debuts for Scotland.

Wheal continued to develop his skillset in 2017 and 2018, picking up 26 first-class scalps in 12 four-day appearances, before suffering a back injury in June which cut short his season.

It’s obviously been a frustrating year in 2018 but to be given this opportunity to continue working on my game here at Hampshire is great. There’s a lot of competition between the bowlers heading into next season and it’s a good opportunity, having recovered from that injury, to try and force a way into the first team in 2019.
