2nd Innings: CCC Marooners 148 (46 Overs - Mohan 40; Wheal 3-29)

Hampshire’s game against CCC Marooners on Monday 5th February started with the English visitors winning the coin toss and electing to bat at the famous West Indies International stadium, the Kensington Oval.

Adams’ side didn’t have the start that was planned as five wickets fell in quick succession from the third over.

By the sixth over Alsop had been greeted to the crease by Taylor – batting at number seven – as both brought some stability to the Hampshire innings with the bat before Alsop was stumped for 31 from 39 balls by Khesan Ottley.

Taylor continued to bat through the innings and keep his team out of danger of being bowled out for less than 100, as the young middle-order all-rounder put on a 40-run partnership with Asher Hart (18), and then an astonishing 51-run eleventh-wicket partnership with Wheal (18*), before Taylor was dismissed for 69 by Marooners’ opening bowler, Khesan Ottley (3-33), who ended Hampshire’s batting innings on 152 all out from 42.3 overs.

Hampshire’s bowling innings began with Fidel Edwards and Brad Wheal taking the new ball, with the young quick Wheal recently enjoying a stellar streak in the Super50 competition so far. The two quicks struck by removing the opposition’s top three early, leaving the hosts at 22-3 at the end of the fourth over.

CCC Marooners then relied on a defensive approach to their innings in order to rebuild, as middle-order batters Ottley & Mohan attained a partnership of 27 runs from 61 balls, before Wheal bowled Ottley for 9 runs from 31 balls.

The hosts’ middle-order continued to make starts in their batting partnerships with Mohan playing the lead anchor role whilst his partners were picked apart around him. Young prospect, Asher Hart (2-34) was the seamer to break Mohan’s momentum after the batsman was dismissed for 40 runs from 78 balls, leaving Marooners at 115-8.

At this stage a usual feeling of relief would set in for the bowling side, if it wasn’t for the host’s number 9 batsman, Keron Cottoy (30*), taking the attack to Hampshire, leading the finale of the match to a nail-biting display of resilience.

Marooners managed to work their way to 148-9 before Cottoy’s partner at the crease, Jermaine Levy (2), was caught LBW by Joe Weatherley's off-spin, leaving the hosts four runs behind the Hampshire total.

Both Brads took the Man of the Match performances with Brad Taylor’s match saving knock of 69 runs throughout the first innings, as well as Brad Wheal’s stellar bowling performance of 3 wickets through the top order for just 29 runs from his 10 overs.

With young quick bowler Brad Wheal in the driving seat of Adams’ bowling attack, Hampshire look forward to facing up against Windwards Volcanoes back at the Kensington Oval today (Weds 7th February), following the Volcanoes attaining three losses since their start of the tournament.

With that said, Hampshire will have to watch out for previous West Indies Internationals in the opposition including, Devon Smith, Johnson Charles, Kirk Edwards, and current West Indian IT20 number 3 batsman, Andre Fletcher.
