Lewis McManus led Hampshire to a 12-run victory over Somerset by scoring 48 of Hants’ 171 total in the first of a T20 double-header at the The Ageas Bowl.

Somerset were unable to reach Hampshire’s total, which was completed by a fine effort from Ryan Stevenson, whose 37 from 28 balls is the latest of a fine run of form with the bat.

Brad Wheal (2-22) crucially dismissed the visitors’ opening batsmen, Adam Hose (4) and Johann Myburgh (10), for low scores, helping Hampshire to secure a strong home victory.

Hants openers Tom Alsop (25) and Jake Goodwin (29) began strongly, and surpassed a fifty partnership, before they were dismissed in quick succession by Michael Leask (3-44).

Leask took the key wicket of Joe Weatherley (18), but couldn’t quell a determined McManus, who scored smartly to give Hampshire a real initiative, two shy of a half-century when the home side were all out.

Somerset were pegged back by Wheal, losing Hose, Myburgh and then Bartlett (7) prematurely, but the contest was far from done.

Leask - who had troubled Hants with ball in hand - scored 33 runs before Alsop got his revenge, leaving Dom Bess (45*) and Sam Grant (29*) to produce a remarkable late surge. Their 72 partnership fell 12 runs short of the mammoth task in hand, confirming Hampshire’s victory.

Somerset batsman Johannes Myburgh (77*) scored an unbeaten half-century against Hampshire to secure an eight-wicket victory at the The Ageas Bowl.

Hampshire managed 151-5 with the bat, and bowler Brad Wheal dismissed Adam Hose in his first over, before Myburgh and Michael Leask (34*) accumulated a 78-run partnership.

Joe Weatherley (53) hit yet another half-century, batting with real grit and class, once again exhibiting his promising talent at the crease.

Hampshire’s Tom Alsop (15) scored at a terrific rate before his wicket fell in the third over, caught by Edward Byrom from Liam Redrup’s (1-25) delivery.

When Jake Goodwin (12) was dismissed in the following over, Hampshire were requiring a solid partnership from Lewis McManus (30) and Weatherley, who provided the goods.

The openers’ replacements took Hampshire from 2-29 to 3-97, when McManus was caught by Leask from Somerset bowler Myburgh.

Aaron West took Hants past 100 before Max Waller found the edge of his bat, Grant taking a pivotal catch.

Weatherley reached his 50 to continue a run of proficient run-scoring in the Second XI, before Myburgh struck again, trapping him at lbw.

Ryan Stevenson (5) and Josh McCoy (7) brought up 150 for the home side, as the innings was brought to a close.

Brad Wheal (1-20) dealt Somerset an early set back in the first over, bowling Adam Hose (2) with his penultimate delivery.

Wheal then played a part in the next wicket, catching George Bartlett (39) from Josh McCoy (1-27), leaving Somerset on 77-2; the match still very much in the balance.

That was to be Hampshire’s last breakthrough, as Myburgh surpassed 50 with Leask scoring usefully alongside him, accumulating a fatal 78-partnership to secure a Somerset victory.
