ICC Men’s U19 World Cup Awaits for Tom Prest and England

Hampshire all-rounder will lead England for their upcoming campaign in the Caribbean

England U19s begin their ICC Men’s U19s 2022 World Cup campaign on Sunday and will be led by Hampshire all-rounder Tom Prest when they take on ICC Men’s U19s 2020 World Cup winners Bangladesh in their first fixture.

The tournament is taking place in the Caribbean, with Canada and the United Arab Emirates joining England and Bangladesh in Group A, one of four groups. Runners-up from the competition's last instalment - two years ago - India are in Group B alongside Ireland, South Africa and debutants Uganda. Group C comprises Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea, whilst Group D sees hosts West Indies take on Australia, Scotland and Sri Lanka.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super League, whilst the bottom two will take part in the Plate League. The eight teams in each league will take part in a knockout stage before playoff matches determine each team’s final position. The Super League final will be played on 5th February.

England will want to improve on their performance from 2020. They finished third in their group, behind West Indies and Australia, meaning they had to settle for the Plate League. However, a quarter-final victory over Japan, followed by a semi-final win against Zimbabwe, set up a Plate Final with Sri Lanka. They were triumphant – confirming a ninth-place finish and qualification for this year’s tournament.

Head Coach Richard Dawson, who led the England U19 selection panel, selected a 15-man squad and two travelling reserves for the 2022 World Cup. Prest was given the role of captain, with Warwickshire’s Jacob Bethell selected as vice-captain.

Following his breakthrough into the Hampshire first team during the 2021 season, Prest was rewarded with his first professional contract in November.

The deal will keep the 18-year-old all-rounder at The Ageas Bowl until at least the end of the 2024 season.

He will now be looking to build on this success as he attempts to lead the Young Lions to their first World Cup victory since 1998.
