Liam Dawson Impresses On International Duty In Pakistan

Hampshire all-rounder Liam Dawson played a key role with bat and ball in England’s IT20 series victory in Pakistan

Liam Dawson heads to Australia and the T20 World Cup off the back of an impressive series with bat and ball in Pakistan.

The Hampshire all-rounder returned to England’s IT20 side off the back a successful Vitality Blast campaign, where he took 20 wickets and scored 90 runs.

Dawson played in the second, third, and fourth matches of the series – all in Karachi – as England returned to play international cricket in Pakistan for the first time since 2005.

The left-arm spinner opened the bowling in all three matches, and although he went wicketless in his first outing, he bowled a tidy spell of 0-26 in four overs, as Pakistan’s dynamic duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan chased down 200 without losing a wicket.

Dawson bowled just the one over in the third IT20 as England won by 63 runs, before he claimed the wicket of Pakistan’s captain in the fourth match, with Ben Duckett taking the catch in the deep, as he finished with figures of 1-32 in four overs.

A top order collapse in England’s innings left them reeling at 113-6 when Dawson strode out to the middle.

Needing 54 in less than six overs, Dawson had it all to do when David Willey fell for 11.

Requiring 33 runs off just 18 balls, he obliterated Mohammad Hasnain for 28 off an over.

He first crunched a half volley over extra cover for six, before an exhibition in playing the ball late, and using the pace of Hasnain.

He guided the fast bowler to third man, and smashed the subsequent free hit for four through deep midwicket before once again late cutting Hasnain to the third man boundary.

A clip off his legs brought the run rate to less than a run a ball, but England couldn’t complete the job, as Reece Topley was run out in the final over needing four runs to win.

Dawson ended the tour with 34 runs at a strike rate of 200, plus the third lowest economy rate (7.22) amongst the England bowlers, and fourth best amongst all the bowlers in the series.
