Match Preview: Hampshire v Middlesex - Specsavers County Championship

Teams news ahead of Hampshire's Specsavers County Championship match against Middlesex at the The Ageas Bowl

Hampshire will be looking to secure their first win of the 2016 season when they welcome Middlesex to the The Ageas Bowl for their third Specsavers County Championship Division One match.

Hampshire Squad:

Jimmy Adams returns to the first team after scoring a century for the Hampshire’s Second XI this week, whilst Liam Dawson is included in the squad but he may not be fit to bowl. New signing Tino Best comes into the squad in place of the injured Fidel Edwards.

James Vince and Sean Ervine will be hoping to repeat the fine scores they accumulated against Yorkshire at Headingley, having hit 119 and 123 respectively in the rain-affected draw.

All-rounder Brad Taylor is the latest Hampshire player to be ruled out through injury after he sustained an ankle sprain during the Second XI match against Somerset this week.

The Opposition:

Batsman Sam Robson is in fine form, having scored a double-ton in his first innings against Warwickshire, then adding a century for good measure.

Middlesex’s main bowling threat comes in the form of England’s Stephen Finn, who took three wickets in his last Specsavers County Championship match against Durham, dismissing countryman Ben Stokes for nine runs.

Recent Form:

Both Hampshire and Middlesex have opened the 2016 season by securing two rain-affected draws. The visitors finished second behind Yorkshire in the 2015 Specsavers County Championship table, drawing more games than any other side.

Hampshire will take a lot of confidence from their opening two matches - on their travels to Headingley Vince and Ervine compiled centuries, before James Tomlinson (3-31) reduced the champions Yorkshire to 183-8.

In this fixture last season Will Smith was the pick of the Hampshire batsman, scoring 93 runs in the first innings and finishing unbeaten in the second.

What The Team Say:

Tino has settled in well - he played for the Second Team this week and he bowled with pace and skill and he showed that he is ready to play. There have been some good individual performances in the first two matches and something to build on, but as always we’ll look to keep improving and get some results on the board. We are up against another strong side this week against Middlesex, but we feel in good form and we are ready to take them on.
